Default Suitable Gas Engine for Great Planes Sukhoi SU-31

I have a Model Tech Dragon Lady with an XYZ 26cc gasser, that caused lots of problems due to bent shaft and wrong timing but learned a lot. Have just purchased a Great Planes SU-31 suited to 1.60 glow 2 stroke or 43cc Fuji Imvac going by the manual. Not sure on the Fuji for the price. Have read about ignition interference. Was keen on a Brillelli but have not heard back.
I am thinking a DL 50 but not sure if it will overpower the model or if that will cause any consequent problems. The manual indicates a weight of 13-15lb. Broad questions but would appreciate any helpfull comments.

Will it torque roll with this power or will this fly OK just throttle back. The engine will fit OK at 170mm standoffs to prop hub same as a Fuji Imvac 43. Have not heard of any problems with the DL but nervous about another XYZ. Although most problems seem to be with the 26cc.

Cheers.

The DL-50 will work great on your plane. The included standoffs are the correct length for it. They place the prop 6.75" from the firewall as specified in the GP Sukhoi manual. You will have more power than you need, but hey that just makes it more fun to fly in my books. The DL had a couple of little growing pains in the past, but is a tried and true engine. Just be sure you buy from a certified dealer such as DL Australia to avoid getting a substandard engine and retain good support.
Another engine that is looking good for this size of plane is the new MT-50. It has a little less power than the DL and weighs a little less too. I have been told it is extremely smooth running engine and costs a bit less. Someone I know is going to be testing one on his GP Yak 54 that he is building right now. I am looking forward to seeing the results as it will expand our choices of engines to choose from.

I have a DL50 great engine, but it may be a bit much for the GP Sukhoi. I have a 82" 330 Extra with a MT50 in it that is perfectly powered, very nice running engine, light at about 3 pounds 9 oz. The problem with the DL is that to use it you'll need to swing a 22 or 23 inch prop, the MT is happy with a 20x10. There's another thread around with a guy with a MT50 in a GP Patty, he liked it.

I've got the DL50 in the GP Yak54. If I had waited 6 months longer I could'a got that sukoi. Much rather have the sukoi. And I would have put the DL50 in that. Go for the DL, great engine.

Thanks for the comments chaps. I will need to get the wheels mounted to find out how much ground clearance I have or maybe look at a three blader for either engine. I had not heard of MT but looked up and found they are Chinese origin and about the same price from Tomy RC Models. I have not had any adverse comments with regard to the power other than ground clearance. If I used a Brillelli 46 they are are run / measured with a 22" prop.

I just looked at the Manual for the GP Yak and it is very similar to the Sukhoi in weight and engine recommendations. I would expect ground clearance to be similar. Yak has two wing halves where the Sukhoi has a single wing. I will put the servos in the tail and that should balance with say a DL 50 in the front and will put the EI and batteries up to the fire wall inside the front cowl.

The Yak has a round cowl also. Did you need to cut out much of the cowl to fit the DL inside. The outside diameter of the Sukhoi cowl is approx 8".

Just the bottom where the cylinder sticks out.

Here is a pic pf my Sukhoi with a DA-50. I went with a wrap around pitts muffler. It also requires the 3" stand-offs for the engine. Yes My orginal cowl had some damage but made for good practice!!

Thanks Sevans16,
Have you flown it yet and with what size prop. What size prop will fit with ground clearance. I have seen some comments where the supplied DL muffler has broken and I may need to get a DA for the quality. Is there a reason you went with the wrap around muffler or did not get a DA muffler with the engine.
