3W 170 - Cannisters or bolt on Mufflers - Which is better for smoke?
Hey Guys,
Looking for a little knowledge and insight. I am putting a 3W 170 AIS version on my TT TOC Pitts M12 40%. I have both the stock bolt on mufflers and a cannister set up including K&S headers and Pefa L90K Cannisters.
My question is this. Which set up will give me the best smoke production. I am very experienced in smoke systems and realize to two biggest factors are heat and volume of fluid going through the mufflers.
I am not that experienced with cannister mufflers though. Can I get the same smoke production from cannisters as bolt on mufflers?
Let me preface by saying I am a sport flyer. I do not compete. I just love to fly big planes with smoke. So the power issue is not as much concern as the smoke is, although I keep it in the back of my head as well. If I can increase power with cannisters and not suffer any loss of smoke, I am all for it. Also, noise is not an issue at our field at this time.
I am looking for general info as well as info specific to the 3W 170. Fill me with your knowledge guys!!!!!!!
Thanks

canisters produce more power. More power is more exhaust heat, so more smoke to be had, if you want to put it that simple.
