About 10 years ago when we were operating various drone system the word then was that the 16 was next. Because of the fly by wire system it was seen as a fairly easy conversion. No one though about auto land back then though. Several of the QF-4's have wound up a smoking hole here in the desert because of malfunctions. Bob

Way cool! I flew safety chase in my mighty T-33 for the old F-102 and F-100 drones. The 102's had 2000 hrs. on them and our T-33s had 15000. The "Deuce" was solid as a rock and easy to chase. One even brought me home one day after my attitude indicator (the old J-8 "eightball) died and there was weather below us. I asked the drone controller how it was doing and when he said "fine" I said "then you have the lead" and hopped into the normal 3' wingtip clearance formation. We cleared the weather, I moved back to the chase position and we went home. Made for an interesting debrief. I flew chase on the first F-100 flown at Tyndall AFB. The "Hun" wasn't as easy to fly with as it looked like it was going to "fall off the pedestal" any second. The nose was continually hunting in both pitch and yaw. The takeoff and landings were done manually by two guys in a bread truck with a second floor and balcony parked next to the runway.

Quote " (F-102) solid as a rock and easy to chase"...

Not good for a fighter, but makes for an EASY target! [8D]

Damn Tom, we gotta hang out more, I had not heard those stories! Spoke to Lavergne the other day, said you were goofing on his progress on the '16! hahaha, I gave him hell too.

Merry Christmas guys,

Sean
