Default HOW TO UNGLUE JB WELD?

Hello experts,

I glued an electric motor to a carbon fiber tube via JB weld and now I want to unglue it (the plane had crashed). I tried to pull it off but ended up reactivating my hemorrhoids instead. Please offer me your second to none advise please. Thanks !!!! DP

you can cut the bulk of it off with a hacksaw or dremel then grind some more then sand the final little bit off, I have never found anything that would melt it or decompose it. []

Grinder!!! I used the stuff around some brass pipes I have on my gassers muffler just to help keep them from spinning and falling off. The engine heat hasn't even turned the stuff a different color yet. Good stuff!!!!

From the J B Weld website itself...

"Q: How can I remove J-B Weld after it is fully cured?
A: When fully cured, J-B Weld can only be removed by grinding or filing it off, or by directly heating the product above the 600 degree maximum temperature threshold. "

An Exacto blade, held in the heat of of a propane torch..might get hot enough..but..I never tried it with J B Weld.

I would think the heat would damage the motor.....

It's easy, diffenteral expansion is the answer :: Put the whole thing in the freezer overnite then heat the metal quickley to 200f or so. metal plastic or metal wood will shear themselves apart when the metal expands faster.

Use a soldering gun and "burn" away the JB selectively.

The only way I know of to strip off cured epoxy, is a warm solution of about 75-80% nitric acid and 20-25% DMSO. DMSO is a solvent that penetrates your skin and carries things deep into the tissues and into your blood stream in seconds. Timothy Leary used it as the carrier solvent for spray bottles of LSD... very effective against angry riot police. Imagine when it contains nitric acid and dissolved epoxy. It has been used experimentally to carry things into burn tissue, deliver pain medication to arthritic joints, that kind of thing. Unfortunately, it is a really effective solvent and picks up all kinds of nasties en route.

Mechanical means are the only practical method I can suggest outside of a chem lab.

I would second the suggestion of a Dremel. The heat application, if not careful, could damage the motor. Lock the whole thing in a vise and go at with the smallest bit you have on a dremel and just cut it away. I am assuming that your aim is to save the motor and the rest is expendable.

MJD, JB weld is a product that is in it's own world and nothing like standard epoxy. More like the after effects of epoxy after good old Tim had his way with it!!! Think epoxy on acid and steroids!!!

It might work, but I suspect the JB weld is flexible enough to withstand it. I give it a try.

I'd also try wacking the joint with a sharp chisel, when the assembly is very cold. The steel and carbon fiber should be relatively unaffected by the cold. Hopefully, the JB weld will be brittle.

I do have to second the freezing technique.

Or freeze the haemorrhoids then chip them off, use more JB weld to stem the bleeding.

On some engines I JB Weld the carburetors in and if the need arises to remove the carb, I just use your standard $19.99 heat gun.
I would most likely use a cut-off wheel to release the electric motor, shouldn't have to harm anything.
