What could I expect to pay to have my boat painted? Where have you sent your boats to have them painted?

from what I have seen from coments made by other members you will probably spend upwards of 300.00 bucks to get the job done...A long time ago in a galaxy far far away I was a ASE certified master technician with certification in paint and body as well and I have allways done my own paint work..

Right now I have 4 hulls hanging in my garage being primed and painted..just in materials cost alone I will probably have at least 100 bucks worth of materials in each one and most shops take the cost of materials for a project and triple it and thats what the customer gets charged so right there is at least 300 for a descent paint job...
When Gas and oil went sky high so did ANYTHING using petroleum products or petro chemicals which most all paints are....

As far as who to send it to it would probably be best to find a local paint and body shop to do it.. the prep work and paint used for cars is the exact same type needed for rc boats you need a good urethane job to be able to withstand gas and nitro fuel and also urethanes will take alot of abuse and still look good where enamels wont...

Try body shops. I had one do a Sport 40 for me. He sanded, laid on the main color and clear-coated it for $150.00 otherwise I do them myself.
Before he did it I checked with one of the best boat painters around. He wanted over $300.00 to paint it one color and it had to be paint ready plus I had to pay shipping both ways.

 Motorcycle dealers too,I'm sure the  local Hardly dealer will have at least one good painter they can send you too.
 car shows and bike shows will give you leads also.

I paid $350 last year for a full deck to be painted up like a croc. I searched the web for air brush artists & also asked around other Hobbuyists to see who they used. I was pretty happy with the job done on my boat, but he's heere down under, a long way from you. I also had the choice of how much I wanted to spend which resulted in the amount of detail inthe painting. I delivered the boat fresh out of the mold & he prepped it painted it and clear coated to seal ittoo.

Check with the local body shops and consider a 1 coat with vinyl and a clear coat over top. Another option is duplicolor rattlecans then take the boat to a body shop and have them clear over it. I'd check first to make sure the coatings are compatible.

Here's 2 paint jobs from local body guys. Got roughly 150 in each including decals.

Hey Dicko that croc painting looks great that guy did a really nice job. Thanks everybody for the tips I'll check with some body shops around here and see what they say. Did you guys strip your boats out all down to the hull and then gave it to your painter?

Thanks, I drew up a plan of what I wanted & let him loose.

Once you find someone to paint you boat, check with them if they want you to prep your boat or weather they'd rather do it. The guy who did mine wanted to prep it himself to make sure it was up to his standards, some will let you do it & cut the cost accordingly.

Standard urethane clearcoat is compatible with just about all paint types.

I'd paint both of my Oberto's with dupi-color rattle can paints then used Crossfire automotive urethane clear coat over them with no proublems...Crossfire system NAPA sells....My boyfriend&I ended up getting three gas boats to paint from Celina races after they saw my boats.My boyfriend painted my miss vegas...[img][/img]

Most painters are REAL funny about prep. The guy guy that painted the red one wanted to prep himself. I prepped the blue one but the painter still went over it with a fine tooth comb.

Is it possible to do those fades with a rattlecan?? I'm making a Scarab, and the side of the hull has three fades all the way to the transom. I don't have an airbrush- but I could get one!!

Use the airbrush.....you'll just splatter with a rattle can.

Thanks. I have a 2 galllon compressor, but I can't justify spending 2-300 bucks on a compressor for an airbrush. Will my little compressor work with a brush I buy separately?? sorry for the noob questions!

Now are you talking about an actual airbrush like an artist would use, or a detail spray gun like used in the auto industry? Your 2 gal compressor is MORE than enough for an actual airbrush. Depending on how large your area is, the detail gun should work with it as well.

Thanks Hemi- I was referring to the little Paasche brushes that one would use for scale models and such. Mine goes up to 100 psi, so that's plenty. Could anyone point me to the appropriate paints to match the following for my Scarab:

1. Black- JET BLACK
2. Turquoise- '72 FORD TRUCK, TIDEWATER AQUA
3. Violet- '71 AMC, Code D-99, WILD BLUEBERRY METALLIC
4. Blue- '78 AMC, CODE H-1, DARK BLUE METALLIC
5. Green- DUPONT COLOR CODE 512, DARK GREEN METALLIC

I know I won't be able to match these exactly, but should I just use automotive paints?? Thanks guys!

Go to youre local auto paint people and give them youre list and they can get ya set up use urethanes and urethane clear coat...and youre small compressor is plenty good enough I use a paschee and know for fact a 2 gallon compressor will be good enough also you can pick up a nice hvlp detail gun from lowes for like 30 bucks that works great....and to get the fades to look right youre gonna have to use auto paint or something that you can control how much reducer goes into it you will need to reduce the paint just a bit more than normal to get a good fade..oh and the lowes special gun will run on the small compressor just fine...any other questions just ask away between me and dreamin hemi and miss hydro we got this paint thing locked down and under control...here's a pic of a candy red to black fade I did on a miss lumar over haul just so you can see I do know how to do it..

Dude- that is just SICK! Thanks for the advice. I may try just watercolors on paper for awhile, just get used to it.
