26cc Extra 260: G26 or SPE 26?
Hi,
I have two 26cc engines....a stock magneto Zenoah G26 and standard SPE 26 with Melody CDI ignition. I would like to find out what you'd do if you were limited to only these two (as I am now) for use on the small Extra 260. The plane is built really light, so I am a bit worried about using the G26, and would like to hear if anyone has any experience using it. i doubt there will be problems with the SPE, but power may be lacking........

I would probably work on swapping those two engines for something else. The G26 is heavy and the SPE is not something I'd use on an airplane.

i have a stock g26 mag version on a 1/6th scale stearman that weighs in at 14 lbs and is seams to fly it good but it is a heavy engine and on a sport plane it may not do so well

Thanks guys for the responses; right after I posted last night, I figured I'd do as Pat suggested, and use the SPE. I was planning on getting some of them Bowman rings, a new carb and an ignition unit. I will install it stock and see what improvements I can make.

Ejiro, don't use a carb over 11.1mm in diameter. Anything bigger will just constantly flood the engine and is definitely not worth using. Anything bigger and you will NOT be able to tune the SPE26. I'd bet that an 11.1mm carb would provide significant power gains to the SPE.

I'd send the G26 to Ralph Cunningham at RC Ignition and have him convert the G26 to E/I and he'll cut some of the weight off. IMO it's a lot better engine and it'll turn more rpm's. I've had the 26cc and 40cc SPE engines and they just don't seem to have the power.
