I don't have a true rock crawler, just a summit, but I can see the appeal to it. just like anything else you're trying to get from point a to point b, in this case you're not trying to do it the fastest but to find a route that really challenges your RC to the limits.

RE: DONT HATE ME FOR ASKING...
I hate you. Haha, just kidding.
It's the challenge of making it over that next rock, or up that next slope, or around that next obsticle, or through that next gate. It's certainly not for everybody. For many people it will never click and they will be board very quickly. However, for some people it simply draws them in. There's also the aspect of modding a crawler into something that can get over that crest it couldn't quite manage before. Or changing a setup and finally mastering an obsticle that would always trip you up before.
It's similar to somebody chasing a certain speed goal with a fast RC. They may change gearing, ride height, body style, tires, battery, ESC programing, etc. to get a couple more MPH.
The competition aspect of it is a big draw too. You don't need a giant area for a crawler course and local competitions are springing up a lot of places.

Next time you have the chance, try it out. Either you'll love it or it won't do anything for you. I personally love the challenge and the test of my driving skills as well as my ability to read a course and think a few moves ahead. True rock crawlers are not fast by any stretch of the imagination, they just aren't designed for that.

RE: DONT HATE ME FOR ASKING...
The only thing I like about crawlers are the looks, especially the ones that look like the real thing, frame, suspension, etc. Kind of like the SX10.
I had a crawler, set up a cheesy course in my backyard. Did it for a month, got bored and bought a 'fast' rc. Its just not for everyone I guess. But I gotta admit I love watching videos of people crawling on real courses.

I've been to competitions and I got bored pretty quickly. You spend most of your time sitting around watching other people run the course.
What I would really like isn't so much rock racing or hill climbing but just plain 'outlaw' racing, ie. racing on a mixed course on land you don't actually own with all types of terrain. If some of the course is rocks, that's cool. But I also want a river / stream, logs, trees, underbrush, etc. More than just plain rocks.

they look like they would be more fun with some more speed, like access said a mixed course with some speed/performance would be a blast.

That's actually why I like the summit so much. With the remote high/low gear selector you can go slow to climb or faster for between obstacles. It's not a pure rock crawler by any means but with the right tires it does pretty well.

No hate here [8D]
I agree about the looks and challenge of crawling. Seeing a scale rig is just too cool, and trying to do what the 1:1 crawlers do is one of those things that just never gets old. Every obstacle has its own difficulties and trials.

RE: DONT HATE ME FOR ASKING...
can u take a crawler and set it up so it can go fast and take jumps? because the suspension on some are perfect for a truck.

when climibing hillls with truck such as the emaxx, summit you just hit the throttle and try to fly up it, which isnt really realistic. with a crawler, its more real, you have to navigate around the big holes/dirt clods

RE: DONT HATE ME FOR ASKING...
thanks guys,
I think I might get one. I've done some research and the ax10 seems to be the "tmaxx" or "savage" of rock crawling. I would get the kit, because i like building stuff. But then there's the kyosho rock force, the venom creeper, and the integy 1/8 scale crawler... I think it would be best to get the ax10 because it would be the cheapest, there are a lot of upgrades, and it gets good reviews. BUT THEN, I gotta get the radio servos and the motor, THIS IS WHERE I NEED HELP.
thanks<br type="_moz" />

RE: DONT HATE ME FOR ASKING...
i like scale crawlers in particlar. the main fun for me is building
one from raw parts cheaply then going anywere with it. so you got a slash
(example) and your running it around a little track you made in the
yard. fun for a while but you get sick of the track after a while.
what about the other %70 of the garden thats rough terrain and not being
used? thats were you need this little bad boy. home made, goes anywere,
popps wheelies, looks cool, batterys last for hours and rougher terrain just means
more challenges! taking the rc through stuff you wouldnt think of with a beer
in one hand, smile on your face thinking about the next build.
access has got it. its not all comps and slow crawling over rocks.
heres my home made bad boy. i give you the crusader..
you can chuck it in the car, head to the hills and just pull over at
a nice spot, throw the truck in the bush and spend ours in the bush
having a blast!

RE: DONT HATE ME FOR ASKING...
Well, for my 2 cents, I view rock crawling like I view drifting, there are those who like it but it's not for me. Being an oval racer, I prefer the high speed, close racing of oval.
Some people like rock crawling, it's just not my thing.
