Default Header and Teflon tape question

Now that I have my MT header and it fits within the confines of the fuselage on the de Havilland DH-4, what's this about wrapping Teflon tape around the "bumps" (for lack of a better term"?

It looks like that part of the header is made by just crimping the tube to that shape which allows it to be bent somewhat.

The open joint between the header and canister will be sealed with some Teflon tubing and the stinger outlet will head out the bottom with more of the same.

On the same setup, I have ordered some Teflon tubing from McMaster-Carr rated at +400 degrees F for both the connector and the stinger.

Will this be good enough, temp-wise?

Default RE: Header and Teflon tape question

Your header will see local hotspots in excess of 400F.
The MT header is made of seamless corrugated tubing, unlike many rolled corrugations which are not seamless.
The rolled headers should be sealed by winding a twisted strand into the corrugations, and then tightly wind about three overlapping layers over the header.
The non-rolled corrugated tubing, like straight bent tubing will benefit from a teflon wrapping in that it keeps the header inside hotter, and the engine cowl environment cooler. It also provides for better smoke if you have a smoke connection.

Thanks. I knew there must have been a good reason to do it, and not just to make it leak proof.
