Default Ok, Bad ESC?

Had my Venom 19T burn out in my Stampeded a few weeks ago. It was about 2 years old so it was due. Replaced it with another Venom 19T. That engine was running really really hot so I started doing the pinion swap but before I could get it right it stopped working. Figured I overheated it and it died. I am now in the process of doing a single (Titan 775) mod on my e-revo and have the two Monster 550's left over. I dropped one into my Stampede but it is just too slow, it is a 14.4 volt motor so it is too be expected. The problem is that only after 10 mins of running it too was smoking hot????? I was using a 19t pinion on it. Even though the engine isnt getting the required voltage can it still overheat from over gearing? I hooked my multi-meter to the ESC and it reads proper, I don't want to drop another motor in if it is just going to burn up. I would have tried to reduce the pinion but the motor will not adjust in the mounts far enough to accommodate a smaller pinion.
