Default Hello from a new user. Would like some help.

Hello All

Iam a new user to the forums and am looking for some opinions on a future purchase i am going to make in 5 days.

Iam looking at a selection of vehicles and would like to know what anyone has experienced with any of these, speed, durability, handling in various surfaces(lawn, dirt, pavement).

The reason these have been selected is due to extreme budgeting needs, and mostly due to availability to where i am at.

This will be my first nitro and am sure i will be hooked when i fire it up the first time and break it in...

The list is as follows:

<span id="prodTitleBrand">1/8 Ultra LX-1 RTR w/Force .28ps</span> <span id="brandName" sizcache="16" sizset="375">byOFNA Racing Division</span>
<span id="prodTitleBrand">RC10GT2 RS RTR with Radio</span> <span id="brandName" sizcache="16" sizset="375">byAssociated Electrics, Inc.</span>
<span id="prodTitleBrand">Nitro Firestorm RTR</span> <span id="brandName" sizcache="16" sizset="375">byHobby Products International</span>
<span id="prodTitleBrand">MGT 3.0 RTR</span> <span id="brandName" sizcache="16" sizset="375">byAssociated Electrics, Inc.</span>
<span id="prodTitleBrand">Nitro Sport RTR with TQ Radio, Pro.15 Engine</span> <span id="brandName" sizcache="16" sizset="375">byTraxxas</span>

Thanks in advance.

Hear the Firestorms a good durable truck. The G3.0 is a pretty decent engine.

the ultra LX-1 dunno about the truck but the engines really good have that engine in my Jammin X1x its super easy to tune.

btw you could should also look to see if he ofna lineup of 1/8th buggies is available to you, there pretty damn durable, and raceable. The Jammin X1x costs $340 from amain for a complete RTR kit (just add batteries and nitro). The Hyper 7 TQ black from what I read is pretty good also at $270.(those prices are in the US) Either would be able to tackle any terrain the 1/10th ST's could

Malous - I see you're a new user but may I ask if you are new to RC. Most specifically do you have experience with Nitro cars?

The reason I ask is I've seen a ton of new comers try to get into RC with a Nitro car and get discouraged and frustrated due to the tuning, up keep, fuel costs etc that go along with owning and running a Nitro car.

If you have experience with Nitro then I would recommend the Nitro Firestorm or the Traxxas Nitro sport from the options you listed. If you are not familir with Nitro or don't have someone to help you then I strongly recommend you go electric. The E-Firestrom Flux or Rustler VXL are both great choices.

I'm not trying to talk you out of Nitro or start a Nitro vs Electric battle. I've just seen so many people buy Nitro;s as their first car and end up walking away due to frustration.

Thank you for the replies so quickly

I don't have any experience with nitro's exactly....but i have been a very casual rc person, mostly with Radio Shack / The Source (where i am The Source took over Radio Shack) vehicles..

The 2 I mainly drive are a 1/10 fwd drifter and a 1/5 nascar  (it was on sale.....don't ask)

I'm the type of person who likes to fiddle with small components and have actually wanted to get into nitros for years, just decided to take the plunge recently.  It takes an awful lot to discourge me

From most of the horror stories i've read on numerous sites, sounds more challenging fun then disappointing discouragement (can those two words go together?)

Should be making a purchase this Saturday when the wife and i head down to the city.

Will be watching this thread closely til then.

Thanks again!</p>

Default RE: Hello from a new user. Would like some help.

if you go nitro, forget the traxxas nitro sport. its just not that great. i had one. not nearly as fast as nitro should be. and its a VERY old design. im not sure why traxxas still makes it honestly.

alot of horror stories with nitros envolve 2 things, buying cheap chinese copies OR not following the proper breakin procces.
as far as the cheaper copies, many of them do work fine. but the quality control on these things is poor. so, some people get a decent RC, and others get a bucket of bolts.

what exactly is your budget? you have to consider the whole package with nitros: fuel, glow plugs, glow plug warmer, battery for the glow plug warmer(rechargable is nice) battery for electric starter(unless you get a pull start) charger for said battery, after run oil, a can of compressed air(makes cleaning easier)
so the total for the accesorries can add up.

Default RE: Hello from a new user. Would like some help.

Actually most of the horror stories I find are from people who buy the cheapest nitro rig on the planet with a junk engine in it (like the one in exceeds, and other HSP vehicles), or they didn't read the instructions on how to break an engine in and took it out full throttle on the 1st tank, or bought a used nitro with a completely trashed engine but was told it ran great(I did that when I 1st started), and they decided the tuning is hard and nitro is crap due to their mistakes.

Nitros great if you like fiddling with stuff and don't mid getting your hands a little dirty, and seeing you said you like to fiddle with small components your in luck
Like I said I had a hard start up in the nitro world due to buying a truck with a completely shot engine. Made the engine into a paper weight, and bought a new engine and never had an issue with it since.

BTW tuning is not as hard as people try and make it, its only hard if you buy a cheap ass engine.

I would like to thank everyone who's posted so far, many positive opinions for someone who's looking to start in the world of nitro.

I have a large lawn with few obsticles in it, so, learning to drive over not so rough terrain, i'm not concerned with crashing into anything major to cause damage to the vehicle.  To give you an idea, 2+ acres with my house about 100ft from the road.  All kinds of room, not many obsticles.

So, jumps and speed should be ok.  I think....

Again, my ears are all yours, keep the opinions and suggestions coming.

Thanks again!

all of the original listed cars are great, i have my eye set on the lx1 myself, buddy has one and a bunch of guys at the track have them as well in both the e-conversion and nitro models and they are supposed to be tough ive seen them take far more abuse than most any other buggy out on the track and last year my baddy lost his radio signal and careened his lx1 into a huge palm tree without so much as a bent hinge pin or broken bumper and we always joke that the .28 can pull stumps out of the ground[sm=thumbup.gif]

do not be intimadated by nitro, its a blast and from the sound of it you will probably stick with it

Please, don't take me as a expert (especially in nitro) but I have messed with nitros in the past here and there, and to a point this goes with all rc cars, everything is replaceable (wether or not your local hobby shop carries those parts often depends on which car you get) but dont be afraid to bash it and, just have fun with it, like i said everything is replaceable, drive it how you want it, but make sure you do proper break in procedures first then have fun.

might want to ask in this thread, or skim through it

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5074112/tm.htm

That is the firestorm thread and it is usually fairly active.

Dunno what starting out with an electric would have anything to do with nitro. That is like eating a apple when you want a orange.

I started with nitro its not hard if you get a good vehicle (traxxas I hear conflicting things about their engine quality(which also hold true with their electric motors))
HPI's use pretty newbie friendly engines.

Break-In Complete

2 hours  : haha

Flooded motor soooo many times

Blisters on fingers from the pull cord....almost thought about buying a pair of driving gloves ha

during the 3rd tank of fuel (1st just sitting there, 2 and 3 driving at 1/4 - 1/2 speed) if i press the brakes, the motor cuts right out.

I remember seeing some where about that exact problem but cannot remember where i seen it....any quick advice?

The Firestorm is fun.

SEAL YOUR ENGINE!!!!

I had a terrible time tuning until I sealed the engine.  I will never try to tune w/o sealing first.

Default RE: Hello from a new user. Would like some help.

Had a fun afternoon with the car.

It was running fine, for the most part, except for one strange incident.

Was doing some full speed runs driving over freshly mowed lawn, gravel lane/road, and mud ramps (filled in shallow ditches...don't ask) Had a jump when the fuel was low and it cut out.  Had orginally thought it sucked up some air in the tank and went to top off the tank.  Grab the ignitor and....the glow plug was missing.  Wasn't the low fuel at all, but the fact that the glow plug, which i had retightened before even starting my driving, was no where to be seen.

Good news is, checked the motor all over.  Threads to not look to have any problems, not stripped at all.  Problem is, never even considered the plug going missing so never got a second one right away and the car didn't either.  Yes, i do know that they can go bad....bad i would accepted, but gone.....that's just...insane.

Has anyone ever had a plug just...disappear?

Some of us had a difference in opinion.....State your opinions below.

Would the engine die out right away @ full throttle if the plug was tossed or popped out during a bump/jump/roll  or would/could it keep running any amount weither it's 5 feet, 10 feet, 50 feet?

Soooooooooooooooooooo insane.
