DG 1000 Sailplane - Good First Sailplane?
I have flow RC planes for 4 year and recently given up the hobby. But I thought of giving a sailplane a go before completely selling everything off. Does any body have any suggestions for either a EP or non EP Sailplane? I have watched a video of the DG 1000 that Hobby Lobby sells and it looks pretty cool!

Thats a cheap model imported from China. It's a piece of crap, unless you are willing to do some extensive mods to get it to where it would be airworthy. The price is right as far as scale gliders go though. Just remember. You get what you pay for(and you don't get what you don't pay for!) All in all, it's a an ok sailplane for slope flying. I surely wouldn't put it on a winch!

Thanks for the tips! I didn't know it was made in China! After the Pet poisoning last year, I don't do any business with them unless there's no other options. If you have any suggestion, let me know. I'm thinking about a wing span around 100". I was looking at the GP spirit 100 but I don't know enough about any of them at the time. Thanks............

Ok so you don't want the DG 1000 anymore... The Spirit Elite is the best plane you could get. It flies with any kind of wind and can be easy to fly or competitive depending on how you trim it. It can be fast and aerobatic or just a slow floater. I would recommend you build it with flaps and ailerons. Directly quoted from technical support at Towerhobbies.com:

RE: DG 1000 Sailplane - Good First Sailplane?
thanks for all of your great info! I have found a GP Spirit 100 on Ebay and would like to know how the 2 models compare? Also if you have any suggestions on RX and servo that would work well with these planes, let me know. I have a Futaba 168 8 channel RX and 4 - 645mg servos. My radio is a Futaba 6EXAP 6 channel. I'm bidding on Futaba 7 cap at the time. Most of my gear has been sold but I think I have enough to get a sailplane going!

More than likely, flat land with a high start. I may go to a big park or take it to a club setting. I'm just starting to kick around some ideas. I've read that the larger wing span planes handle better. that's true with the RC planes with motors too.

Larger gliders really do have an advantage. It shows up mostly in the number of successful flights that catch a thermal. And what looks like a minor difference in size, like from a 2m to a standard, actually shows a better ratio of total launches to successful thermal flights.
BTW, the issue of using a highstart at a local RC club field really is a can of worms. Actually, it's usually a barrel of snakes.

Why don't you just get yourself a Radian. It is the most hassle free sailplane on the market. And it can out soar a lot of the more expensive planes.
Best bang for the buck in RC today.
Be careful if you get a Radian as it will hook you on sailplanes. And then you might as well keep all of your other stuff.

To the last three repliers. THis is a two year old thread. I suspect that the OP got a glider or didn't and moved on.
Rockonmyfriend, you really need to look at the dates on the threads you pull up from a search. There's seldom anything to be added by bringing up an old thread like this.
