RE: OS FF-320 pegasus
Hi guys,
I will try to get a video done for you with sound within next few weeks. I am flying a OS FF-320 in a SuperStar (Henry Haigh design) with approx 87" wingspan and about 19lbs flying weight. The engine has until now turned a Zinger 20x10 @ 7.000 rpm on ground, but I switched now to a Menz 20x10, still need to tach it. The Menz prop has about 3mm thicker prop hub then the Zinger! My FF320 is still not fully broken in, in level flight with full power it could build up bit more speed. What props do you use? Of course this SuperStar is not to be compared with a J-3 Cub, it has much less frontal area and is faster.
The engine runs absolutely flawless, but I do use a glow driver to heat plugs for idle. Never had a cylinder dropping. It starts up at first throw by hand, sound is just marvellous - all guys at our field love it, and me most of course. I would not call it a sewing machine - maybe you can remember the good old Honda CB 550 four from the 70´s - it is very much like that on full power. Throttle response is awesome crisp for that big engine, you start to play with it while taxiing just for show...
Power is very much ok for that plane - as said before here, I do not intended to do 3D. It has more static thrust as the plane has take off weight, and nice aerobatics just like the real plane are making lot of fun.
Fuel tank is approx. 30oz, but I never use more than maybe half of it for 7-8 minutes flying time. Oh yes fuel, the engine does require good quality methanol and at least 8% nitro. I am using 15% full synthetic oil.
Would be nice to hear more from your experiences!

I also have a FF320, I plan on using it in a 27.6 % Hosteller Lancair IV. My question to you is, how much does your Superstar weigh? The Lancair should come in at about 25 lbs. Will that Pegasus pull it off the ground or no? Hosteller recommends a 3.0 ci or better engine to fly the Lancair, the Pegasus is about 3.25.
I have become cencerned about the power issue with the Lancair since I bought the GP electric Lancair EP and it was so underpowered with the stock motor and battery that it took over 200 feet to lift off and then tip stall into the ground. grrrr.
Thanks

RE: OS FF-320 pegasus
Hi all,
first I need to apologize that I missed last time to hit the "subscribe" button.... I was wondering it was so quiet!
Yes, video is done, but - it is all together one file and about 245MB of size!! It is a complete sortie, showing engine start-up, taxiing, take-off, some nice flying with soft aerobatics, and landing.
I am more the stick and rudder guy, not the video freak, and the video was done by a friend of mine. I asked him to make me a few sequences short enough and smaller resolution that I can put it on the net. Do you recommend youtube or where to put it?
- More HP, the exhaust system is four single flex stainless steel tubes (almost just like the Honda CB´s...), routed down out the cowl and fixed under the landing gear. Works fine, great sound, clean airplane. They are of equal length, of course. 2 pictures added for info.
- chasrb, my Super Star has 19lbs flying weight. I took a little care for weight during building. Plenty of power for that plane, the FF320 pulls about 22lbs on ground. The Menz 20x10 prop is far, far better than the Zinger 20x10, now the plane really whistles at full power in horizontal flight.... like that! Landing speed is not so slow, the plane must be put down in 2-point attitude, a stall is possible otherwise - but it is manageable.
I do not know about airfoil and wing area of your Lancair, pls give more info if you like for discussion. Good point with the FF320 is that most likely you will not have to hassle with tail heaviness....!
I will let you know asap the video is in pieces!

RE: OS FF-320 pegasus
Thanks!
The Super Star has 87" wingspan. I chose this particular plane, because the cowl is wide open at its end - above the wings and below the wings! I was always a little concerned about cooling problems for the rear cylinders, but never had any problem so far.

My friends Laser 2000 also has an 87" span...he will be encouraged by reading this...[sm=thumbup.gif]
Does this engine really need on board glow for a more reliable idle? If so, what manufacturer provides one for a 4 cyl. engine?
I remember reading a review of the Pegasus 320 by AJ Coholic a while back...but I don't think he used on board glow?
Personally, I think I would use it but it is my friends engine and plane, so it's up to him.

RE: OS FF-320 pegasus
Maybe it does not need it, but it helps alot to save your nerves. There is nothing more stupid then a engine which cuts running at final approach on a short airfield, when you need to go around again !
This is the glow driver I use, they do have a english page but this 4cylinder glow friver is only listed on the german pages.

On our field, we need low idle to help reduce approach speed and make steeper approach possible.

Hehe,
I see you are expert... you almost got it. Bruno Giezendanner flew the "Marabu", it was similar but had more rectangular wing tips, was overall more "square".

My avatar plane design is from Richard Brand of South Africa (Rhodesia), who originally called it Spit Panzer. In our region here in Germany, it was a famous pattern model in the late 70´s and several guys copied it and sold homemade kits. I got mine in 1994, the guy who sold the kit was in his 70s. This was the plane I always loved being a boy. For obvious reason, the name was changed to Speed Panzer, which hits it quite nicely...
Richard Brand flew also in 1969, as Giezendanner did with the Marabu.
I am a old style pattern fan, I love the Ballistic Pattern Association idea!

Ah...I got them blended together...
Back in the early-mid 70's when I was a middle teen, an older club member gave me a big stack of magazines, and some of them were British publications. I remember the Spit Panzer and Marabu!
I flew a Banshee for a while, in the late 70's...and a Tiger Tail.

RE: OS FF-320 pegasus
Great video! Thanks for the post. A couple of things. How much does the plane weigh and what did you use as a silencer?
I have one of these just waiting to be put in my Lancair IV, of course I have to build the kit first.....
I got my weight answer from your earler post, did not go back ad re-read first.
Looks like you fly at the same field Martin (Sputz) flys at.

For those who have difficulties to see the video on RCU (like myself)...

Chasrb, did you notice I do fly in germany?
