I too noticed the alingment pin didnt;t ... line up. I PLan to woller the holes out unti I get the wing to fit, then but in Garolite G10 donuts on the inside..check insidence. then sleeve the pins with brass

the Garolight is fun stuff to have arround. I need to order some more. I get it at www.mcmastercar.com Be sure to get the 1/32" material. They come in differant colors. looks like I will have to settle for Brownish-green??

Length Width Performance Characteristic Sheets, Bars, Strips, and Cubes Type Operating Temperature Range Price
6" 6" High Tensile Strength, High Impact Strength, Flame Retardant Square Sheet Up to +284° F 8667K111 $2.00

12" 12" Electrical Insulator Square Sheet 0° to +284° F 8667K51 4.33

24" 12" Electrical Insulator Rectangular Sheet 0° to +284° F 8667K52 7.53

24" 24" Electrical Insulator Square Sheet 0° to +284° F 8667K53 12.24

36" 24" Electrical Insulator Rectangular Sheet 0° to +284° F 8667K54 16.69

48" 36" Electrical Insulator Rectangular Sheet 0° to +284° F 8667K55 27.55

The splash gaurd over F1 hole, was used on my other read carb applicaiton. I highly recomend it. I filled my first plan up with fuel/oil from1/4 throttle hovering..

The edge manual helps. thanks. I have been building this on my own besed on experiacen with the others... there are a lot of "misses" with this bird.

PM me your email address and I will send you the manual for the Extra. It is a bit different from the Edge manual.

I received my plane yesterday. I will definitely work on the glue joints but overall the plane is nice. My aft anti-rotation pin on the right wing needs some work. Other than that the plane fit together well.

I weighed all the discrete components on a digital scale. Using the included hardware, the all-up weight is 154.3 oz, or 9# 6 oz. Add 6.5# for everything else (with 2ea 1500 mAh and 1ea 1100 NiCd batteries, 17.5 oz total) and I am looking at around 16# total. This will probably drop a bit with carbon gear (already have it, $49 shipped from www.Graphtechrc.com, CA 29%/31% Extra gear), lighter Kavan wheels, and possibly a carbon wing and stab tube (haven't decided yet). This should save (4+4+3+1= 12oz). Going with lighter batteries will cut a bit too.

My plane did not have the stabilizer tabs, but the bolt holes exist just like FreedomFlier's plane. I will make root ribs with tabs the same way he did.

I hope to get this together soon. Today is a blizzard and I am staying home, but my wife has a big list of honeydo's for Valentine's Day.

One more thing, I quickly measured the wing area and calculate about 1290 in^2 instead of 1380 as quoted on the box. Oh well. I am sure it will fly great. I am using a new Brillelli 50gt on this plane.

Nice pics,

I first flew mine Dec 2005. Getting great mileage. The best I got the weight to was 16 lbs 1/2 oz. with no Wheel Pants. That is with CF Gear, Tubes and believe it or not those wheels that come with the kit are lighter than Kavans. I could have saved 3 oz with no pilot and could have saved another one or two oz in batteries. So 15 3/4 lbs is doable. I rund a 16 oz fuel tank to keep the fueled weight down and am thinking of 14 oz since I usually fly ten minutes rounds.
I run a DA 50 with stock muffler and it is great. My dry weight now is 16 lbs 6 oz since putting the wheel pants back on and changing a battery. So fueled weight is approx 17 1/4 lbs and with a recent test on the digital fish scale we got 29 lbs thrust... there is no lack of power on this 50cc.

Nice canopy Freedom, I like the sceme on the wings that you have.

Guys I there is one thing that I would reccomend before you fly is to change out the landing gear. The metal (at least on the two I got going) for the gear is soft and the smoothest landing will see you readjusting them regularly.

Brett, nice catch. It is a 1972 Datsun 240Z with the Cartec Intercooled Turbo on the factory motor. Bolt it on and you go from 180 HP to 350 HP except I did the porting and polishing and race pistons...estimated 400HP. On high boost you can burry the boost guage (16 lb max) and the car comes alive like it has a big block motor.[X(]

I have a long-standing hate affair with stock landing gear. They all give me grief. I plan to use the Graphtechrc gear for the CA models 27%/31% extra 300, now going for $49 shipped. I already bought it.

Freedomflier, great job on the cockpit. All of that detail really makes it stand out.

Richard, nothing compares to a turbo on a straight-six! Especially when you have that much power stuffed into a 2300 lb car! Can your brakes handle the speed?

Freedomflier, did you use the depron on the bottom of the hatch? I am going to remove mine and use it to make up instrument panels.

Some planes have heavy hatches and need some lightening, but this one is pretty light (5.9 oz without canopy). Reusing the depron will at least transfer some weight rather than adding new weight, however small it is.

Standard brakes work pretty hard. The most curious thing is if you are on the power and accelerating they seem to work even harder to pull it down. (an object set in motion tends to stay in motion until a force acts against it... that little 2300 pounder is accelerating at near 2 G's...

Well I am finanly done with the wheel pants (3 oz) and am thinking about adding smoke and a small tank to this one. I would be adding only say 7 oz plus liquid. The plane flys too light now at 16lbs or so the smoke option might be good here.

I learned a good lesson this weekend. Never fire up a plane on computer memory with the wrong model initiated. I think I wiped out my choke servo under the load.

I spent some time re-gluing the glue joints in the fuse. I will spend more time tomorrow.

Got all the electronics in. Useing 2400 pack for ignition, 2600 for RX.

I love useing this G10 stuff.. very strong and light.. I need to order some more from mcmastercar.

Here is how I setup the throttle servo. I used balsa, G10, and bamboo skewers to build the stand-offs

Well, the moment of truth... It came in at 17.00 without a spinner or wheel pants... tail heavy.. BUT! I can move the batteries foward, and I will run a spinner...

One more thing, I quickly measured the wing area and calculate about 1290 in^2 instead of 1380 as quoted on the box. Oh well. I am sure it will fly great. I am using a new Brillelli 50gt on this plane.
I revised my calculation, and then verified by drawing in AutoCAD. The wing area is actually 1364 in^2, measuring only the wing panels. Good news!

Freedomflier, your plane looks great. AT 17# with the zdz80 you will have a difficult time keeping it on the ground! Moving the batteries should help you balance it.

How many hinges did you use on your ailerons? I am installing hinges tonight.

Also you might want to throw a ziptie or something around that throttle servo. I have experience glue joint failures on throttle servos before, it isn't fun! Maybe just a good epoxy fillet on your mounts will do the job. Great work, by the way! You have come up with many good solutions for your plane.

Thank you sir!

I went 1:1 on all the hinges.. I think there are 6 on my ailerons.

You are right about the throttle servo. I could NOT image this poor little thing stuck at WOT with a zdz80! I did use 5-minute on the standoffs, and pin it with bamboo, but maybe anouther pin would not hurt.

I ordered an ultimate style spinner 3.5" from Dave Brown. the spinner and Moving the Ignition battery forward onto the engine box and a spinner may get it to balance.

Even worse, if it is stuck at 1/3 throttle it will fly around until the fuel runs out, which is probably longer than the batteries will last!

I think the Ultimate spinner looks great on an Extra. I like the length of the Ultimate spinner.

Freedom, did you get your spinner yet? I ordered one from Dave Brown over a month ago through our local hobby shop and it hasn't arrived yet. It was to be cut and drilled for a Zinger 22" on a Zenoah 62 but I wouldn't have thought it would take that long. Especially since the hobby store and Dave Browns shop are in the same town! Your plane is looking great and I'm following your footsteps on mine pretty closely. I took some time out from it and a Wild Hare project to build a couple of plane stands for them out of PVC stuff. One for vertical work like motor mountings and such as well as a regular horizontal stand. I'll have to drop you a pic ot two just fer grins! The vertical stand is a work in progress as there are things I would change. I guess that goes for the horizontal one as well. Just like the planes, there is always something that you would do differently after you did it initially. Thanks for your postings! They are great!
