RE: Metal Morphing a BVM F-86
Thanks Ghost, The BVM product and Greg's building experience helped in making this one of the best projects to pass though our doors. Once finished it will be in a class all it own
Mitch - no problem with stopping by for a visit but I can't promise that we will be working on a project as nice as the F-86 Just give a call some day and I will schedule a time with you to visit.

This is something that we have done on other projects and found that the same technique worked great for the anti-sway brackets on Greg's plane. Greg sent me some pictures of the full scale brackets and after looking at them I noticed that they were casted out of metal, probable aluminum, so I applied a special application of aluminum to the plastic pieces and then just steelwooled up the shine. As for a progress report, we have everything plated and have removed all of the oxidation, the plane has move to our polishing department and should be polished up next week. I am going to take some more pictures of the Sabre just before it get polished, it looks real cool this way too. but in the meantime here are some pictures of the anti-sway brackets and pod.
Enjoy

Ok I figured everyone has seen enough small parts plated in aluminum, so here are a few pictures that I took before its to be polished. I did take one of the gear doors over and polished it myself just to get things rolling. I like to trial fit all the parts just to make sure we haven't changed any clearances. Greg everything fit very nice, I just hope I have all the parts in the right place

RE: Metal Morphing a BVM F-86
This is my favorite stages[8D] this is the first of three polishings it will get. I just couldn't wait to see it together The next stage is to apply the panel lines, at the same time I will go over the factory panel lines just to freshen them up, then is back to polishing. Greg requested to have the gun panels plated in a different metal to replicate the full scale, I will post the pictures when finished with that. If you cup your hand over your eyes to block out the background, it looks as if you can climb in
Enjoy

These are some of Greg's F-86 stable mates, if you look at turbos on the Lightning you can see that they have rusted, its a characteristic of one of the metals we plate with, we dont have much use for it but once and a while it comes in handy. The gun plates on the F-86 are not aluminum so we are going to come up with a metal that will match that plate.

Here is a picture of the panel I will need to replicate, I'm pretty sure that they were stainless steel but was wondering if anyone knew just what kind of metal the full scale used?

Thanks, I appreciate the complements and will pass them on to all that are working on Greg's plane.
SJN-- You must of misunderstood me, we know that the skin of the F-86 is aluminum but the one panel that the gun ports are locaded does not look like the same metal and it would be helpful in knowing what that metal is, I then can use a piece of the original metal as a reference. Greg just sent me a better picture of the area I am talking about and I'm attaching it to this post.
Thanks
Ron

Weaseal--very nice pictures, thanks, I hope Greg comes on line soon, I didn't realize that the tailcone had that same metal skin. I also noticed that the intake of that model is different, I dont know the F-86 that well but I'm sure Greg will be able to clarify it for me. Thanks for posting the pictures, they all will help me get this right for Greg

RE: Metal Morphing a BVM F-86
Hi Ron
The F-86H is a different model, actually a later one. It is larger and shaped a little differently in a number of areas. I'll be happy if you can replicate a little bit darker/bluer panel for the nose area with the gun blast tubes ONLY but only in a subtle way. I can also do it with several techniques. I do not want any other areas different, including the rear. That would not be consistant with my documentation.

One for you to make sure the shines just right
Yes the F86H is a later model but some of the earlier ones had different material on the tailcone.
A good reference would be Squadron/signal publications F-86 SABRE in action aircraft number 126
which shows all the models.
regards Brian
if you want the full size pic pm me but its a big file

Thank you for the help and the post. I would truly appreciate a high res photo of the F-86 shown. Do you have any other shots of that one? I will PM my e-mail.
Best regards

RE: Metal Morphing a BVM F-86
Heres some updated pictures of the Sabre, we had to send the front part of the fuselage back to the plating department to get the gun port panels plated in a customized metal. We also have all the panel lines applied and shes been to the polishing department for its second polishing. Greg wanted the panels to be more subtle than some of the original panels and we are very pleased with the out come. Getting close now what do ya think?[8D]
Greg we should be finished tomorrow, but I will be out of town Thursday. I plan on shipping on Friday

I can not tell you how pleased I have been with the outcome of this project so far. Your work looks great, gun panel is perfect. The turn around is outstanding as has been the communication.
Thank you very much!
