Just Starting a Mono 48" Build

I put both sides of the bottom flat on a table with the straight portion of the keel together, inside up. I do not bevel the edges. I run a piece of masking tape along the joint in the middle. Then I just lay the bottom on the framework and use masking tape to hold it in place. Because I do not bevel the keel edges there is a vee formed which I now fill with epoxy. The masking tape inside the bottom keeps the glue from dripping thru to the inside. When the straight portion is dry I pull the front togehter and again put masking tape along the joint inside and hold it in position on the boat with masking tape and fill the vee at the keel with glue. You may have to put a couple pieces of tape across the seam on the outside to hold it together on the front. When the glue dries you can just pull these pieces off and fill the spots where the tape was covering the glue line. Then I pull all the tape off the inside and glue it on the boat making sure everything is straight and flat. Again I use masking tape to hold it in position while the glue dries. You can see in the pics above that I put couple ieces of wood along the bottom to try to keep everything flat. I also only pull the tape across the bottom right above the bulkheads so I don't pull to hard in between the bulkheads and make a hook in the bottom. Just my way of doing things. Doug

OK some more pics on how the build is going. Like I said I don’t get a lot of time to work on it. What I have done now is fit the bottom two sheets to gather on the stringers and bulk heads and epoxy them. The next thing I will do is epoxy them to the stringers and bulk heads, May get to it tonight, I am happy the way the sheets fit together. Harold

Hi all I got the bottom sheeting put onto the stringers and bulkheads now. It did not go as well as I thought it wood, I added microballoons to the epoxy so it would not ron over the sides of the bulkheads. As I was bushing it on it started getting hot in the pot so I had to rush to get it all bushed on and get the sheeting on lined up and taped down. If you look close at the last two pics you can see that I did not get all pulled down. How do I fix this? Thank You
Harold

all i can suggest is cut the join there to seperate the two pieces clean them up best you can then try and pull it back together failing that you might have to just leave it it might not affect the running too much as that part of the hull wont be in the water much when shes running .what epoxy did you use i allways use slow set 3hr epoxy that gives you a good 45 mins working time before it starts to go off.a good tip for building these things is get a hot glue gun tack things with it to hold them then epoxy the seams afterwards, ive not done this yet but its an idea ive seen used a cpl of times and it sounds a good idea.

Steal a nail file from your wife!! the sandpaper type ......then CAREFULLY have a go at it being careful not to sand wood!
That is one of those mistakes that ARENT meant to happen!!!

With it not sitting correctly you have probably introduced both hook and rocker into the hull. Split the joint, tidy up as much as you can and re-glue. See if you can get it to the correct position, this is the least hassle. If not, get it as close as you can and then go on to next sentence.....
Epoxy some more ply on the inside to give extra strength and sand it down to where it should be, same technique as used with glass hulls that have rocker. Use a long sanding block so that you keep the running surfaces true and flat [sm=thumbup.gif]

Thank you all for your help on my last post. I got all the repair done and I don’t think that I got any hooks or rockers. I will be posting some pics on what I have done. I am thinking of building my own fuel tank with a V bottom to fit ware I want it out of fiber glass. Do the Zen motors need a fuel return line? Or just the fuel supply line and a vent? I will have my new Zen motor tomorrow if my bud brings it to me!

Here are some more pics of my build. I have got my new motor from WHH; I got the 5 hp power mod done to it. What mods do they do to the motor to take it from 3.8 hp to 5 hp?

A bit more work done on my build. I razed the sides of the back and transom one inch. I also molded this fiber glass fuel tank, after popping it out of the mold I checked the size and it came out to be a 40 oz tank. Looking at the pics you can see where I am going to install the tank; the pic with all the clamps is just a dry fit. I am going to be running a Zen G260 with the 5hp mid mode and it has the WT644 crab, so I am going to need a fuel supply line to the carb and a return line from the carb back to the tank and a vent line, By looking at the pics where do you think would be the best place on the tank to install the fittings and what type of fittings should I install in the tank. I am not too got at wording things; I hope you all can under stand what I am saying. Thank You Harold

I have put two coats of Mas Epoxies Resin slow cure on the bottom and sides of the hull, I like this resin, when it cures it is not at all tacky. I have also used the band saw to cut some strakes, I am not sure if I will use them or not. This boat my turn out to be a bit on the heavy side, I am planning on molding a complete fiberglass deck and hatch for it, That is why I cut the strakes. Will have more next weekend.

This post is two parts because of the number of pics that I have taken, got the fuel tank installed in the hull, Flotation put in the bow of the hull, and put the deck on the hull. I know you are going to ask what type of flotation that is! So I am posting pics of the label, I put a scrap in water for a few hours and it did not take on any water, Could not find any pool noodles in the winter time.

Hi Bentley In reply to your question about leak test, I put 2 PSI of air in the tank and let it sit for one hour, And it held that PSI all that time. So I am happy with that, Thank you for the good comments, And thanks to all others how have commented on my build, A big thanks to you Tony also.

Looks great, I love the natural varnish finish. I'll be starting a Wildthing shortly, and it will be my first wood boat (outside of a Dumas Swamp Buggy I built when I was a kid). I'm quickly taking note of some of your assembly methods
Also where did you get the idea/plans for the the glass gas tank?

Hi MKMotorsport Thank you for your nice comment on my build, the building part of any hobby I get into is my favorite part of the hobby, Have fun on Wildthing build when you get started, Hope you start a new post on the build. Where did I get the idea/plans for the glass gas tank? My own idea no plans just took some measurements made a wood mold lined it with poly and then lay up the glass.
