Cool, a flying test stand.

One other idea and I'm grabbing at straws like the others. Is it possible that something is restricting air flow into the carb while mounted in the fuselage? I'm thinking like maybe causing a choking effect on the carb inlet. Some fuselages are pretty airtight! Does your engine mounting box on the plane have any holes around the outside to let plenty of airflow into the box to feed the carb?

I'd love to see the takeoff and in particular the landing!

I had success tonight, I think the engine got wind it was going to become a paper weight..not sure what the fix was, I pulled the carb apart and blew it out, new fuel lines, rerouted the fuel lines, new fuel filter, new plug "finally arrived today".. anyway it fired up tonight in the plane and runs great...really appricate all the help......Thanks Mark

I hate it when that happens. At least it is running good for you now. Have fun.

Things threatened with certain death have a tendency to alter their behavior.

Mark,

Good news!
Even though you didn't find a "smoking gun" your engine is now running well.
Nothing much beats death threats to get your point across

Sounds like there was some FOD in the carb around the metering needle keeping it from sealing. How are you filtering the fuel? Peronally I run a filter on the can and I run a felt filter as a clunk and a lawn equipment filter between the tank and carb. Have had no FOD issues since I stopped using hobby filters between tank and carb.

I'll say the same thing I've been telling people for years. Run down to your local saw and mower shop and pick up a pair of Walbro felt clunk filters. One in the gas can and one in the gas tank. No more dirty carb, dirty fuel problems.

I don't tell people about these due to preference, I do so because they work, having proven themselves in over 400,000 flight hours. There are no over the counter Dubro, Sullivan or similar filters found at the local hobby shops that work effectively for gas engines.

I have used these on my engines up to 100cc's. Are they good for the 150~170 class as well? I was always concerned with restriction in the larger sizes. Out of anyone you would know.

Wow that is flying 8 hrs. a day for 138 years non stop.

All funnin aside, I had not considered the paper filters. Thanks for the tip!
I am re doing the lines in all my gas planes this winter and think I will get some
gas filters,, makes since. Man that tygon yellow stuff is crap, The clunk lines in the
tanks were stiff and brittle. I bought some clear stayflex to try this next year.
Any one tried this line?

Now go get some sleep Tired old Man!

Me too..

cheers
Tim

More like 12-15 hours a day for many engines. The number was not a typo. Next time you buy Tygon obtain "Type F". It lasts much longer. McMaster-Carr.

Super08,

Consider the flow of fuel is restricted only by the fuel outlet orifice at the tank and the inlet orifice at the carb. Toss in brass line tubing diameters while you're at it. Look at the orifice diameter at the carb inlet then look at the outlet orifice on the filter. I "think" you'll find a lack of restriction, or a restriction equal to what is found at the carb inlet nipple. The felt will draw equal to the demand, meaning there is zero restriction due to felt influences. So yes, they work on 150 to 170CC engines as well. For confirmation consider that 3/32" fuel line will handle the needs of a 170-200CC engine.

Thanks. I was just wondering as I dissected one last year and found the microfilter in behind the felt and it is extremely fine. I presume to prevent any fibers from the felt from entering the carb. It will make my plumbing easier knowing I can use them on my larger engines as well. I tried a large inline on my 150 but it was a pain. They have a habit of trapping air that won't get sucked up until you go into a rolling maneuver causing the engine to go lean for a bit.
