Those MiGs are designed to cope with pretty rough fields. So they close the main inlets on the ground. They have slots on the top side that allow enough air at least for taxiing

As to the Mig intakes being closed off, there are louvers above the intakes that open which allows the main intakes, while on the ground to be closed to prevent FOD ingestion on unimproved runways. Russian jets are built to fly from literaly "anywhere"!
Shots 18 and 19 i believe in which the Migs are landing, 18 has the louvers closed which are above and just aft of the main intake while 19 with the digi camo has them open.

Awesome shots (as always). Did you happen to get any photos of the Gripen whose tail is circled in the photo below?

FOD is correct, but to elaborate, the MIG 29 was design to take off from relatively uprepared strips. They may well have the odd rock kicking around.
The air enters through louvres on top of the intake fairings until the aircraft is airborne.

I bet the Belgian 31 Squadron scheme will end up on lots of F-16 ARFs... just like their previous tiger jobs. Those stripes look just like flowing lava.

That's the only thing us Belgians know about military aviation. We know how to make a F-16 look good
