I know that. I was giving the OP some hard numbers to go by. I forgot to add that the Sky lipos are rated at a 2C charge. 8 amps is only 90% of that capacity.




Are there hard facts that prove that charging at more than 1C shortens the life of the battery, and if so, by how much?

I know a lot of people say it, but I've seen no graphs, charts or data from long term tests. I think people are afraid of charging at more than 1C because I did read that when Lipos first made the scene, they were a lot more unstable while charging at more than 1C. I also read that as long as the battery doesn't get hot while charging, it does not shorten the life. In fact the article said that not matching the C discharge rate with your motor and ESC is the reason more failures occur. Once the battery is stressed from over discharge, it is more fragile during charging.

I don't have any hard evidence to back it up it's just something I do for piece of mind, I have been known to charge above 1C once or twice when I was in a hurry but I don't make a habit of it and I know my batteries can take it. All my batteries are 40C or higher.

A neat thing about those old "1C" packs is that now I am charging those at up to 5C as well as the new "2-5C" packs.

Ya' see...that's the thing, I don't think there is any really conclusive testing data and specifications out there. It's all "what my friend said" and actual user experience in which information varies greatly.

The only real way to determine it with your batteries is to measure the Internal Resistance (IR) of the cells over time.

Overcharging or overdischarging cells will increase the IR over time. To a point where eventually it won't accept a charge.

That is why manufacturers recommend that the charge rates be within a certain range.

If you don't get a baseline reading of your battery's IR the day you buy them, then it's difficult to measure accurately.

You can always start with "today's" measurement and go forward from there. It won't be completely accurate, but it will definitely give you an idea of what is happening with your batteries.

How do you measure the internal resistance because I have lipos coming in the mail would be good to know and instead of buying a new charger I will save the money and get a nice one so I just ordered another balancer.

Thanks for the info. Does anybody have a specific break in method for lipos or is there no need to break them in or a optimal charge rate to charge for the first time since i will be getting new ones hopefully today.
