RE: HELP! Old Midwest Extra 300S / Now a buildthread
Looks like I finally have me an airframe.
Still need to enlarge the rudder, did the elevators already.
The tail is not glued at this time, gonna take it to the shop and reglue all joints and sand and fill the woodwork. The engine should be here in a week or so.Will decide on hinges and then I can pick a colour layout.Got a few things in mind

Resumed working on it awhile back.It now has a larger tailgroup, the Taurus 52 arrived in November 06 sometime.Seems to fit ok,even though I think its overkill for this Extra.Have the tail covered.Things are going slow, but progress is being made.Pics soon

I built this kit years ago and have a MOKI 2.1 glow engine in it. What a sweet flier!! You will love it!!!
Definitely worth the build.

Mine started out with a ST 3000, flew for several years with it, then after it came the BME 44. It was definitely my favorite plane, until I pulled instead of pushed at about 50 feet of altitude...... Echoing the others, you should really like it. I too did not like the wing mounting method, much prefer the wing tube method.

Still tinkering with it,actualy got the tail covered.
Before everything gets finalized,is there anyone that can confirm that the incidencre for wing and stab are 0 degrees?

RE: HELP! Old Midwest Extra 300S
this looks like the place to start,,,,
i just bought an old 300 and i havent got a clue as to the throws. ive flown it 3 times with the super tigre 3000 that was in it and it seemed alittle under powered considering how thirsty it was, so i put a zenoah 45 in it but havent flown it with this motor yet. it weighs 18 lbs without fuel and is a tad nose heavy with cg at 5 7/8". it was set up with what i think is short servo arms, and id like to see if im even getting close to the correct throws. any help you folks could give me would be greatly appreiciated... thanks

No ,this is the first generation flat stab. Will add tailbraces.
I will switch out all the hardware as there maybe a problem with the threaded control horns. The kit is from about 1994.
I have a Taurus 52cc,but am really reconsidering the weight and power of this engine.I think a light 40cc gasser maybe better for this size plane.

Actually, i've got a 50cc Brison that just might find it's way onto mine, If I ever haul the box down and decide to build it.

Nitro wing...
Beautiful Job. I've got a kit sitting out in the garage right now, I think you've just inspired me enough to open it up and build it. You mentioned that you enlarged the elevators (or stabilizer), and the rudder. How much did you enlarge them from the originals? And what engine did you finally decide to go with? I'm thinking a 3.2 Brison that I've got sitting here....

Congrats Nitro on sticking with the project. I'm sure it'll fly great for you.
Mcmike, a Brison 3.2 is an excellent engine for this plane. If you use it, be sure to put the rudder servo in the back near the elevator servos.

RE: HELP! Old Midwest Extra 300S / Now a buildthread
Mcmike.I stayed with the big 52
The rudder and elevators were enlarged roughly by an inch, just adding to the outside dimensions.
I dont know how it will affect it.I'll keep the throws per book to start.I have a flat stab,so adding was simple.
I think I need to add tailbracing.I was gonna just run some CF sticks ,but I think it will be too rigid and vibrate alot,So I'll probably
get a sullivan kit or similar.
I am saving for a switch ,some A123's and 2 more servos and extensions. Then I get to fuel her up and begin preflight testing

RE: HELP! Old Midwest Extra 300S / Now a buildthread
Nitro Wing,
Yeah, you really need those tail braces on the flat tail version. We've had a few in our club, and the only one that had a problem (!) was the guy who tried just what you were thinking, beefing up the structure with carbon, he folded the elevators and turned it back into a kit. Great Planes has some really slick little hardware pieces for tail bracing that allow you to replace the cables. They're using it on their Big Ultimate. I've got one, and love the way these things work. You might try their site or an email to see if you can get the parts. Mine has the flat stab too, and out of the 4 built by club members, 2 had the flat tails, 2 had the airfoiled versions, and it seems like the flat versions responded a bit 'quicker' and crisper. Good luck! I think i'll stick my Brison 3.2 on mine

RE: HELP! Old Midwest Extra 300S / Now a buildthread
Can anyone tell me what is the distance from the firewall to the end of the cowl? I am putting mine together without the cowl (missing). I have to order one but i want to keep going on the project. I am putting a Brison 2.4 on it.

RE: HELP! Old Midwest Extra 300S / Now a buildthread
I think its 5 3/4
I can lay a tape measure over the plan and take a photo if needed
Mine is just a few more moments away from getting the official go ahead of being airworthy.
The tailbraces are on ,the Taurus has been running well and does not shake the airframe much at all.
I am double checking the fuel lines, running the antenna and just a few bits here and there.
If the CellPro charger for the A123 shows up tomorrow,I may fly it on the weekend [X(]

Hi nitro wing. Your Extra is looking great. I am in the process of building the same plane using the MVVS 45 for power. The only changes i made so far on mine is the wing mounting. I am using two dowels on front and two bolts on back.
I am interested how your c of g works out with the Taurus 52. Great engine by the way.
Bob.

RE: HELP! Old Midwest Extra 300S / Now a buildthread
I was suprised that it was just a touch tailheavy with the ignition battery in the front fuse.I do have the tailbracing and heavier 3x 5955 in the tail.Once I had the battery on the firewall, the Cg was right on the spar as recomended.I have A123 at the wingroot former.
throttle servo in that area as well.
Hopefully I can get it weighed this week.No charger from cell pro yet,so I guess I am grounded for a bit longer.

RE: HELP! Old Midwest Extra 300S / Now a buildthread
I am ready to mount a DL50 on my Midwest 300S, the flat tail version. It looks a though the cowl will just reach the fuselage if I mount everything as it is. The drawings show a Moki which is shorter with the cowl overlapping about 1/2 inch. Has anyone mounted a DL50? Did you use shorter standoffs or add tabs to the firewall for mounting? If I use shorter standoffs I will need to cut through the firewall for carb clearance. If I do that the carb will be almost in the motor box and gas may spit back into the fuselage. Will that area need to be fuelproofed?

RE: HELP! Old Midwest Extra 300S / Now a buildthread
I would add tabs with a 2-56 or 4-40 blind nut.
The screws go into the last former, and its not that good of a way of mounting, the screwholes always get all enlarged and stuff rattles out.I would also add a 5th tab to the top center to help support/align the cowl.

JJ, with a rear carb engine you'll probably want to drill a hole in the firewall anyway so the carb is getting "clean" air for intake. It would probably be a good idea to fuelproof the inside of the motor box.
