Default RE: Whats my pc rate for gaming?

General tip - if anyone's wondering how their system is performing, you can always set up Windows perfmon counters to log continuously to a CSV file (once/minute or more). If you choose the correct metrics to grab, you can get good insight into what your bottleneck might be. Make sure you're logging, fire up a game, play a while, then stop the game and look at the CSV file in Excel, for the time period you were gaming.

Mind you, I don't play the latest stuff, but in my case, my CPU was maxxed out during my games - Athlon 2700+. I have 2 GB of RAM, but the games I play never hit that threshold (or come close). Once you do though, look out - getting info from the HD instead of memory kills performance, as someone said here earlier.

One thing I don't know, is how to gain insight into how the Gfx card is performing during a gaming session - perfmon won't tell you that (I'm sure other tools will).

Horrible dude,

I reccomend getting a Core 2 duo, somewhere in the 4000
the COre 2 Duo 4000's are cheap and can be overclocked to 3.8Ghz.
Celerons are ancient, dont get it
Everything else looks ok

Oh and Foxy, Dont Run SLI 8800GTX's, waste of money, ur spending heaps more money on a new card that will only boost ur fps a tiny bit.
Trust me it aint worth it
10K Raptor harddrives aint worth it either, Your better off getting a 16MB Sata 2 Hard drive.

IF you need anymore help, Just Pm me

We don't know if his mobo or bios will support 800Mhz FSB C2D CPU's. He is working with an existing system rather than buying another. Python what's your budget?

If hes going to get a Celeron, hes better off just keeping the Pentium 4 and not buy the Celeron then.

Python I just noticed the CPU you chose is 533FSB, you should be looking for 800FSB CPU.
This would be a better choice, IF your mobo supports it.. if not just stick to the P4 3Ghz CPU you have.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...999&CatId=2219

I'll see what I can dig up on your system mobo

Python before you buy anything can you post more detailed specs on your system... maybe run SiSoftware Sandra or PC Doctor... and post the specs. I've been doing a little digging on your Dell 8400 and from what I found so far you *may* be running a Pentium 4 530 CPU. The Celeron CPU you chose is faster because it's a 3.46GHz CPU but it would be a very marginal upgrade due its slower 533FSB and Smaller L2 cache.

Thanks anyway man... I used to be a very serious gamer and I'm an IT consultant for 15 years, so don't worry, I know what I want. At this point I'm getting the best of everything I can that's available from my local store (although I'm skimping on the RAM, cos I just got two gas RCs). The Raptor will make a big difference to boot up times. I know the second GTX doesn't do much YET, but in the future it may (depending on developers), and as for Pythonfan's PC, like I said, if that's max budget, then it's fine, of course there are better choices. By the way, I decided to go for the Gigabyte X38 DQ6 mobo in the end, even though it's a lot more expensive than the EVGA. Heard good things.

There's a 2Ghz core duo that will go up to 3.4Ghz on the stock cooler, and at that speed is almost up with the 6850 in performance, but I can't remember the chip code, 2160 or somthing like that?? Anyway, it's the $89 core duo with a nominal clock of 2ghz, apparently it's a budget rocket.

With those screen shots we can now really help you. Good work with those.

Now for the bad news. Due to the fact your chipset is 925X you will NOT be able to run any sort of multi-core CPU. So no Pentium D.
supposedly a BIOS upgrade is all that is needed to support those CPUs, but I don't know if this is true. Maybe Foxy might be able to answer that

You can still find CPU upgrades in the Prescott line. Though there may not be many companies with Prescott CPUs still in stock.
These are the CPU’s that you will be looking for if found. I didn’t list any extreme edition CPU’s due to their price.
Pentium4 3.2 GHz 800FSB 1MB Socket 775
Pentium4 3.4 GHz 800FSB 1MB Socket 775
Pentium4 3.6 GHz 800FSB 1MB Socket 775
Pentium4 3.8 GHz 800FSB 1MB Socket 775

Your chipset also limits you to SATA 1.5 Gb/s. Which is not a bad thing you can still use the HDD in you list but you won't get full speed out of it. Consider adding this card to your list and plugging the HDD into it. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...825&CatId=1455

Other than that everything else is good

looking at the prices you may be better off not upgrading the CPU and just putting the cash to ram, video and hdd.
your 3ghz processor should still be able to hold it's own when paired with a better video card. Later on when you get a new system the HDD and video card can be moved over to it.

lol, yes, what's the problem (and thanks for the vote of confidence boltech, but I'm not sure about that bios upgrade allowing the 2 cores, I doubt it, but maybe, like I said I have lost touch a bit with hardware since the early core duos)...

...python what are you trying to do with port forwarding, I can probably help with that...

Your PC rates a low 2 in my opinion. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but your video card is crap, you have almost no RAM and an ancient CPU. Bear in mind that I am in the tech business, so my standards are pretty high. I would venture that you are not even able to play the Crysis demo. To call yourself a gaming PC, in my opinoin the minimum requirement is that it can at least 'run' the Crysis demo at lowest settings. Consider that my spec listed below, in my opinion, needs a SERIOUS upgrade urgently.

Athlon64+ 3000+ (running at 3003mhz, 800mhz overclocked)
4GB DDR400 RAM
Audigy 2 sound
NV80 (nvidia 8800GTX 756MB) graphics.

I'm looking at a serious motherboard, processor and RAM upgrade. I might even get another GTX

With the current spec I can play Crysis demo at 1600x1200 on Directx9 (XP) with most things on high and get around 30-40fps. That's just not good enough if you ask me, and it's my CPU that's letting me down. My graphics card spends more than half it's time twiddling it's thumbs waiting for the CPU to catch up.
Re-reading this thread and i just realised that you have one of the best vid cards out at the moment. I saw it on the shelf at the store and at almost 600$... WOW. And you want a second one? Wont that be overkill? Or is there no such thing lol.

Haha! No, there is no such thing as overkill, now that Crysis is out... BUT! Parts are here and I have a new spec to post...I'm pretty pleased with it, it runs like absolute lightning, seriously unbelievable.

PSU: OCZ StealthXtream 600W
Case: Cheiftec full tower
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-x38-DQ6 (new overclocking king and widely hailed as the best intel board on the market at the moment)
CPU: Intel Core 2 6850 (3GHz nominal, currently running at 3.6GHz on a HUGE Zalman copper air cooler)
RAM: 2GB DDR2 800Mhz (currently running 966Mhz)
HDD: Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000rpm 16MB cache (Just for Vista really, storage is on a secondary 250GB regular 7200rpm drive)
GFX: Still the NV80 with 768MB, no current plans for another, but you never know.

OK, with that super ninja beast, I can run Bioshock with absolutely EVERY optino set to max at 1600x1200 and get OVER 110FPS!!!!!!!! [X(][X(][X(][X(][>:][>:][>:][8D][8D][8D]

Haven't got Crysis yet, came out today in Greece, will get it soon. Gears of War (PC version) runs like an african sprinter at FULL detail at 1600x1200 too, and looks utterly mental.

Overclocking so far...FSB is a nominal 333Mhz x 9 for this chip, I've ramped up the FSB to 400Mhz and it's totally stable, will see how it goes for a few days and maybe ramp it up some more. I'm hoping to find a nice range of settings to get the CPU to run at 4Ghz on the air cooler. I don't want water, too much hassle.

EDIT: Will post 3dmark06 results shortly.
