Billy, you clamp my new spar in place fit the wings, set your incedences (IE move clamps, micron here or there) , then drill through the mounting holes.
Then take the spar receiver off.
Then glue the spar receiver back, place it on the former, then put the screws through it.
Goes no where forever! Will never move on you. Not even a RCH.

RE: Yellow Aircraft F 18 Hornet Twin Build
I'm with ya Sean, I'm feel'n ya buddy. I'm in the process of gett'n her done. However, one small design change( again just for me a few others who have the prebuilts) I would like to keep the existing wing spar recievers in place. Some of the other guys have an already painted version,so the wings have already been fitted. Myself and Lou have primered only ones, I have no problem with filling and refitting the wings, but what I'm trying to do here is make something that doesn't move the way the wings are fitted from the factory. Basically I'm not going to be milling in the channel for the spar now but making the new spar fit over the existing reciever. When it's done it will be plenty strong. I think though you could make ones for the guys who are building from the kits and have a real nice "hop up part". I think this new version for us will be even easier to make.

Are the wings on the pre-built planes glassed and painted?
I might have to give sean a call regarding the new spar receivers. I think I can incorporate them into my bird since I'll only be using a single Olympus. keep the pix coming amigos. my enthusiasm for gettin' back out to the garage is slowing coming back after a long winters nap.
cheers

Hi Billy,
Could I trouble you to post more detailed pics of the hinge gap covers, please? Specifically, how they are hinged, and acuated?
I am working on some gap covers for my Hornet. Currently, my train of thought is using Nelson piano hinges.
Any assistance is much appreciated!
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi,
Well, amigos, I think the F-18 ARF discussion deserves its own thread at this point, huh? Don't get me wrong, we're open and appreciative of all on-topic, constructive input--but we probably wanna keep the peripheral chatter down so people who might wanna monitor the thread for helpful info won't have to sift through pages and pages of "other stuff". Thanks!

I don't think our mods are only for the ARF guys, so if you don't like some helpful advise to keep these birds strong, don't read the thread. What where doing is only going to make them stronger, ARf or kit. My idea is just that. There are many other ways of doing it. I'm just adding to the pot what I know.

Billy,
Will you tell me please, who and where did you buy your newest Yellow F-18 kit (the one we saw at speedworld)? I'd maybe like to put my order in for one, but honestly can't seem to land on the web site matching that beautiful kit you were showing us down there.
Thanks

OH Billy,
What engine did you say you were going to fit into that Yellow F-18 Hornet? The P-200?
I was wholly impressed with that kit, if you can really call it a kit. Very nicely done.

Hey Larry, What's up? Yeah, the kit I brought to Speedworld is the Yellow Twin Arf. It is made for a single turbine( they call for p180) but you can easily put a p200 in it. I ordered it direct from Yellow Aircraft. Talk to Charles, he knows all the details. The ARF version is nothing more than the kit itself being prebuilt by some of the finest craftsman in China. They did do some mods to make it cherry. The only small issue I have now is the pipe Yellow sells is rated for the 180 and can fit in through the top hatch. Tam makes a pipe for the 200 which is noticably bigger but it does not fit in through the hatch. I will be driving up to Tams after Florida to have him custom make a two piece pipe for the 200 in this prebuilt ARF. Charles lowned me a Tam pipe to do all my measurements with. It has been very helpful. I am looking forward to completing this bird and flying the stink out of it.

For those of you interested: This what we've come up with to enhance the structural integrity of the wing spar joiner. It should help take the torque of the wing joiner and put more of the load onto the former itself. Of course it will be made of aluminum not the wood seen in the pic. The spars from the wings will be longer and the C shaped metal bracket will be bolted to the existing former. You can then bolt the extended spar into the new support on the former. This mod will be done to the ARFS as well as one that was built from a kit.

Here is the trick. The extension that is bolted to the spar will be the thinkness needed to fit snugg in the opening of the receiver. The idea is that you wouldn't have to use the set screws in the bottom of the receiver anymore. I guess you still could but over time these deform the bottom of the spar and get loose.

That's my experience, but I would certainly entertain others experience on this or what might be a better solution.
