NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
The last 5 ribs in the wing tip are not guided by the 2 wing spars, and you can mess up the AOA of these.
The wing build is pretty fool proof, and I assumed thet you could not mess anything up
I still cant see how I got it so wrong on both wings, as I was very carefull assembling the parts.
But it had to be undone, so I hade to remove the sheeting from the wing that was sheeted, and then had to take apart the outer ribs and make it all good again.
So a little extra work

Some good work, working with wood is so satifying ... we need more jet plans /short kits for sure ...
Keep the pictures coming.

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
Hmmm, that's why I don't build anything, useless at carpentry, tried building a Flair Cub many years ago, and I ended up with a banana fuz[>:] But I do admire you guys that build them, much more sensible way to go, and as Scott said, very satisfying.
My friend Colin down in Bexhill, East Sussex, (UK) is building two of Tony's Bronco's, one for him and one for Tony, Colin is a master builder, has some superb large models, Tony's 17' Lancaster, (Colin built three all at the same time!) Ziroli DC3, Ziroli Mitchell, and Tony's Sky 120, so they are good kits, just wish I could build[:@]

well, clearly im no genius either, but you have to jump into it to get better and learn
This has so far been quite easy to build, and quite fool proof......I just messud up the bit where you had to figure it out yourself

SJN, your building this at a phenominal pace ... building from plan in the early years sets you with the tools and skills to repair and build modify anything ... I love it.
Great work ...

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
Thnanks.....I had the week off, but now have to work the next week on te night shift.....so there wont be much progress the next few days
So far I have used 2 pieces of sandpaper, a cork sanding block, 2 bottles of CA, one small bottle of wood glue, 1 exacto knife blade, 1 razor plane, and a stanly long knife blade, and a fine and corse saw blade, and a small and large file.
Pretty basic stuff.

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
yeah thats what i like about Tonys plans the construction methods are basic but functional not over complicated at all, any one can build from his plans...

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
mine is proggresing so i thought i would reboot this thread, fus is finished but could not stand using the abs nose(nowt wrong with it just me)so i built my own from block balsa, booms done will start on fins and rudders this week

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
looks good Budjet. I like the ABS nose, and it realy gets its strength when you install the ply ring on it.
I just installed te wing tubes, and im installing the wing webbing.
Ive been looking into servos and retracts, and there is alot to choose from
I would realy like to installe very thin servos in the tail fins for te rudders to get a direct link, but the fins are very thin.....so im still looking into that.

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
rudder servos are going to be a problem, booms are not very deep, had even thought of going with fixed rudders, hve flown f15s for years without rudders no probs also hotspots etc...

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
Those are about the thinnest servos you can get.
Im going to get the Graupner DES 448 servos i think:
http://www.acemodel.co.uk/rc-equipme.../prod_258.html
It is slightly thinner than the hitech........but even so, they are both almost about as wide as the rudder fins themselves.

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
These are 10mm thick as well, but look at the torque rating.

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
decided to bite the bullet and fit rudders, will probably go for micro servos mounted where shown on plan, our patch tends to be crosswind most of the time so rudders will help...........

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
I have made up my mind too....
I will get the DES 448 servos which are 9.5mm wide.
The rudder fin is 14mm wide.
I will cut the mounting brackets off the servo, and cut out a square exactly the size of the servo all the way through the fin, with a notch in the top for the servo arm, and glue the servo permanently in, so it is a part of the structure.
Silicone greas around the spline and arm so I dont accedently glue it.
With the servo glued into the center of the fin, then glue a 3mm sheet on each side of the servo, and sand it flush with the rest of the rudder fin.
I think it will look great.
I normaly hate glueing in servos, as you will have to cut it out if it needs to be replaced........but I see no other way.
Heres a picture of my fin, and I cut a templace of the DES 448 servo.....its smaller than I thought.

What retracts are you going to use? I have looked at the link in Tony's website and got pricing from there but there must be alternatives as well. 370 pounds scale oleos plus post. not available till may however.
Am very interested in this build log and how it all goes together looking to order kit soon.

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
Weather suddenly got a whole lot better here in Denmark, and I have been out flying instead of building the vampire
Ill get back to it soon though
I dont like the look of those retracts that Tony reccomends. They dont look well made for the price they are.
I have not decided completly on which retracts to get yet, but I think it will be from Behotec.
A 90 degree C36 unit in the nose, and Behotec C40 100 degrees for the wings........but, if using the C40`s in the wings will have the air cylinder point outboard toward the wing tips which will stick out when you remove the wings for transport.
Other alternative is the Eurokit professional line which has reveres retraction of the cylinder. So the cylinder points inboard towards thte fuselage, and the gear strut retracts outboard.
You can choose from 95 to 120 degrees.
Using 90 degrees retract in the wings will make the struts angle outboars, as they sill just follow the V dihedral in the wing........
I will finaly choose my retracts, when the wings have been glued on and assembled, to see what it all looks like.
I have ordered a set of decals from pyramid models so it will look like this:

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
Maybe 90 degree units will work, but the the wheel axel will need to be adjusted, if you want it to look right
The retracts bearers in this kit are parallel to te lower wing surface.

RE: NEW BUILDERS JET KIT VAMPIRE
thread died a bit so ithought i would post progress, booms and fins done ,tailplane built and glassed, now the wings .i have built both frames and i agree that they could be a disaster.having built very many built up wings i check and check again as i build.but if you are an ARTF jet flyer that fancies this then beware its all to easy to build warped wings.the ribs should really have been made with jigging tabs, the last 4 or 5 in particular..apart from that its a fairly easy build.will post some pics when i get time to take them
