Test ran engine. It's a good thing. The halls sensor went out on it on the first run. Sent back to Aircraft International, they replaced and paid for shipping.

Got the family out for the show.

Here is the test stand Ricky(Citation X) and I built. It took us about 5 hours, and 2 trips to the hardware store. We had no plan when we started, but it turned out real nice.

Wayne, I am sorry I missed it. I cringe every time I read the new post's on the internet fly in thread.

It is a real drag, but sometimes work gets in the way.

I will not miss it next year!!

I'll bet Ricky or Jess could get that test stand to hover.

Blake, I have just been messing around alot this summer. It is close to completion. Hatch, cowl, and wheel pants are all primed and Thursday will be painted and cleared soon after.

Here are a few pics.

Glassing the hatch.

Jess,

What weight of glass cloth are you using?
I am going to do that on my Extra.

Wayne,

I used 3/4 oz K and B. 30 min Epoxy thinned with denatured alcohol.

To fill in the area where the canopy stopped and the hatch started I used some killer stuff I got from Don's Hobby shop called "Super Fill".

Thanks Jess.

I'll have to look into that filler stuff. I spent WAYY too much time recessing the canopy into the hatch all the way around but its still going to need filler to make a smooth tansition.

See ya in BNA!

Yea, this thing took me longer than I thought it would to build. I spent more time staring and researching than I did building.

The next one will build much faster.

I am looking forward to 3Ding in BNA!!!

Jess,

How did you recess the sides? Mine canopy comes only about half way down. I have been looking into this also for a edge I am building.

This looks like a lot of work, and the fiberglass adds weight?? How are you planning to finish the hatch after glassing? paint or film?

Thanks for any advice, mark

Mark,

I did not recess the sides. I blended the front, and front sides with a filler.

I also thought long and hard about adding the extra weight. I am a freak for keeping stuff lite. I looked at a pro builders 30% Carden cap at the Joe Nall and the painted hatch just looks so much better. It matches the cowl without that paint to monokote transition.

I estimate a 3 oz penalty.

I also wanted to try this method for a learning experience. This 30% er is my first giant scale build and it was a test run so to speak for 35 to 40% ers later.

Jess,

Thanks for the info. I trying this also for the first time also.

What filler did you use? I think some of the lightweight balsa fillers like Model Magic may crack over time in this use.

3 oz isn't that bad. I made a color switch at the hatch line so it should be easy.

Thanks, mark

Well I flew this thing today and it all went better than I expected. CG is a little forward but will fix that. It required ZERO trim. It 3D's great even with a forward CG.

30% Carden Cap
Engine 3W-75us with Mejzlik 26x10 turning 6100.

Throws High rate-
Elev 50 deg
Rudder 48 deg
Ail 45 deg

Flew high rate all the time. This thing fly's very stable but give it some stick and it turns into a monster. Will post good 3D pics when motor is broken in.

Great job Jess! Looks awesome! I definitely want to put a Carden together next year or so. Thanks for all the build pictures, it was fun and inspiring checking your progress on this plane!! I'm still enjoying the ARF of this size but will have a Carden one day.
Enjoy her!

Jess,

Congratulations again on the maiden. It really flew well and I'm glad I got to see it. The next round of Drake and Zeke's adult beverage of choice is on me!!!

Congrats,
John
