This one sure looks like plastic, this is the model I have. Different windshields for different boats?

You are right...it is acrylic/plastic. Oops, my mistake.

Updates:

Finally more time to plunk around on the Hatch...that didn't work out as I planned. I should have made a proper mold and pulled a part...yadda yadda yadda...it will work out. Just caused another 10-15 hours worth of finish work and lamination. I suppose that is why they call this a "hobby"?:idea2:

Got a little bored (read discouraged) on the hatch so I thought I would start a fresh aspect and let the other rest for a few days. The Strakes are no more...10" and 14" from the transom... I did fry my dremmel on the outside ones over the weekend she put in 12 good years. RIP Dremmel #1!:beers:

The "white stuff" is MarineTex epoxy filler. I used it with great luck on the Miami Vice Resto so I thought I would give it a try here. Works great to fill in the pits/gaps from my dremmel "work" and it dries concrete hard. Sands easy, etc. Good stuff.

Now the sanding, wet sanding, wet sanding, wet sanding...well, you get the idea!

I was able to plunk around in the garag a few minutes last night and started wokring on the Hatch...sanding down my extension. OOH-wee.

It is roughed in and faired down but still need to fill the airvoids and some small gabs in lamination I fund will sanding last nightn...getting there. This hatch is going to be a bigger project than I originally thought!

Yes it does look a bit labor intense and not sure how strong it will be. I may have gone another way and just made a whole new one from 1/16" light ply or 1/8" balsa and glass it in 3/4 oz cloth sand prime and be done. Well anyway you seem to be more than 2/3 done on the hatch at this point and it seems to be going ok if it will hold up to the pounding and gasser vibration without cracking.

It should be more than fine...just need to be a bit careful with weight because of the extra glass work...these old Dumas Hatches were designed to have a balsa frame work affixed to the under side of the hatch and around the perimeter of the hatch hole on the deck...makes them really stiff...

Sure would be sweet to make the rear hatch servo operated to reveal two scale (dummy) 502 Mercruser Magnums tucked down in the hull. I did that once on a small electric 30" Prather hull I built many years ago.

Oh man, I can't make it ANY more complicated...I am having a hard time getting it finished as it is! I did make some more time to work on it ... I have been dreading this afternoon of work for a few weeks and finally bucked-up and just starting cutting.

HOLY Grinding Dust Batman...I chopped up teh old hatch and dove in a jug of West Systems epoxy and a few yards of 4" 6 oz. fiberglass tape...here is what we have left...

I still need to affix the hatch opening support frame into the deck fo the boat and do all the final fitting and adjustments... There IS an end in site!!!

Yes, if you have the time and inclination, I would DEFINITELY make a full mold and pop a full hatch. My half-***** way was not very smart...lots of time to get it finished.

WOW!!! Finally have some updates and pictures of the progress...snuck in hte garag the last couple of days!

There has been quite a bit finished:

The Deck frame is built and in, as well as the the hatch roughed and sanded to fit without having to paound the holy moly out of it to slide down...I was also a bit concerned of fresh air ventilation with the hotpipe after running the Rico Classic recently (I didn't know I was actually starving it of fresh air ran it without the hatch and WALLAH, another 800 RPM. CRAZY! ?Learn something every day!) so it now has some vent holes and a pair of small NACA Ducts. I will be cutting some rear vents later following the test run prior to paint... Engine in, exhaust measured and in...radio box set and linkages ready. Waiting for the seals to set and ready for the water! YEAH!!!

I spent a few minutes last night with a couple cold beers in the garage...aside from greasing the flexy the boat is ready for her maiden voyage on Monday at the City Park!!! Yabba Dabba DOOOOO! No paint as she hasn't earned it until after the first outing...

Neat old Skater Cat! Thanks for posting some pictures!!!

Here are the quick videos of the 1st and 2nd test runs. I am pumped up. I think the hull changes really settled the hull down quite a bit. We were running in the State Park on LOTO and there were quite a few jetski and jetboat wakes coming through. I was not driving the boat (thanks Rich S!!!) and he was being a little conservative on the turns and WTO. It did chine walk just a touch at the tail end of the straight but compared to the Miami vice boat with a blue-printed hull but stock strakes I can say it made a noticable difference.

The stinger is set neutral to keel mounted 3/8" from keel to CL of stinger and dead ON the CL of the hull, outer tabs just touching the straight edge on the back corner, and inside tabs parallel to running surface. Tabs mounted 3/16" from the hull bottom to tab bottom.

2nd run:

I know...white is boring. I need to do some small things to it as I prep for paint...gotta get motivated to finsh the last part!;(

Ran again monday with the guys and mad some adjustments. I raised the stinger about 2* and ran and the running attitude seemed almost perfect but it chine walked all over...so, then dropped the inside tabs about 1 3/4 - 2 turns and she settled right down and still kept the nose up a bit. But it stll "torque bounce" in the corners with the Tater XX...

I pulled out a 6518-3 422C and plopped it on. It had some cavitation, of course, but once up on plane it really was nice and snappy. I still have some dialing-in but overall pretty happy for the first 4-5 runs!

Tony brought his gps and we got it with the Tater and raised strut & 2 turn lowered tabs 46.5 mph. I did not get any gps readings with the 6518-3...but I hope to run her again soon and see what she is doing. Maybe after paint? who knows...motivation.

Harvey,
Just to let everyone know here in thin thread, Ihave the 42" skater hulls in stock, , as well as a New 45 Scarab ( Dumas I am going to list soon for sale, new) I am almost done with all the tooling for the Hatch for the Skater as it will be set up for gas engines as the hatch will be an enclosed.

Lets see a 6 plus HP on a completelt blue printed 42" skater,,,any one care to guess the speeds, has not been water tested as of yet as I am using the hatch for down force.

I also have now naca ducts, like on the above Scarab, arches, 40 or so scoops, and I can design and build a hatch, custom off any boat.

I have a stepped 55" Scarab , I will be prodicine, an apache , and a 70= inch cat out soon

Iam looking for any ppb skaters if you have one let me know.

I will have a full line of billet vents for the Scarabs, the aApache we make, and anyone neding a custom hatch let me know what yu want.

Richard Jones my website is down right now as we are adding new items to it, and a complete rebuild
[email protected]

In process is a scale fake outboard to put on the skater and run a full mod engine in it, will be available in 6 weeks for production

I a going after the SCALE and super detailed market, and custom fiberglass work

If you need a mold of the hatch Harvey , mail it to me and will pop you 1 free of charge as my of saying thanks for all your help, NOIWILLnot keep one for myelph, not unless you want me to , as to make others.
