I used 5.5 Sullivans and made an insert, that the wheel rides on and holds the pant against the strut with a short stud instead of drilling and using a bolt to keep the pant from rotating. Because there is an inherent issue with the carbon composite to metal bond I did not want to weaken that area anymore than it is already.

I will try to get some pictures this weekend.

John,
I could have picked up a 3W 240 twin, dual plugs w. stock/Johnson mufflers, 5" spinner and "Cactus Aviation" prop today for best offer over $1,000, but the thing weighs 14 lbs he he. It would be much like winning a Porsche, but being liable for taxes, registration and insurance he he. I would have had to call Bob and upgrade from the 3m Extra to the 3.3m Yak ha ha, but that would be a little steep, and I think the 3w 240 is a bit heavy.

Sweet, nice canopy there John. I was looking at the hobbyshop yesterday and picked up some 5" wheels, I was laughing so hard, because THEY ARE SO HUGE! 6" wheels are gigantic. LOL, just goes to show the extreme size of the Yak[8D]

Hey John- thought I would show you my idea to mount the wheel pants. This is what I am going to do when I mount the pants on the 2.6 Yak. Since it's not a good idea to "screw" into the composite material, I am going to use HARD wood dowels and EPOXY them into the gear leg. Then match-drill the holes in the pant. Use a large flat washer to carry the load of the lock-nut. See the attached drawing I did.
Hope this helps a little. Good luck. BTW- more pics of your build??

Thanks Vic.. Thats not a bad idea. I wonder how those that have done this are doing it? Screwing them on? What is bad about that?

My carbon gear havent had problems, I guess if you land hard or they take a beating they could wallow sp? out. Maybe these are different though.

Hey Guys, just an update, I did a little work on the Yak review on the site. Check it out

www.composite-arf-world.com

Trying to figure out best way to attach pants yet... wish someone with a 3.3m and pants would come along with the answer!

Thanks
JV

Philo,
Let us know how your maiden flight of your YAK goes. I am building this big bird, too. Do you mind posting some pictures? What is it powered with? DA-150 with KS1090 pipes or ZDZ 210?

Good luck.
