RE: RE: RE: RE: New H-9 Extra330S
The original firewall is held in with two pieces of 3/4"x 3/4" x 4" aluminum angle and eight 4mm bolts. Because of the right thrust, the aluminum angle doesn't fit into the corners very well and some of the bolts were sucked deep into the wood as a result. Once the aluminum was removed, I easily pulled the rest apart by hand. The glue joints were very poor which actually made things much easier for me. I'm sure there are plenty of these planes flying with the original motor box, but I couldn't see putting 50lbs. of thrust on what mine looked like out of the box. Besides, like I said, the original would have put the ZDZ's carb smack in the middle of the firewall.

RE: RE: RE: RE: New H-9 Extra330S
stickjammer,
I have an H-9 330s with a zdz 80. Useing a pull pull on the rudder. Where did you locate your batteries and fuel tank? How did it balance?
I noticed there was only a 1/8 inch peice of balsa ply that will be holding the wings on the fuse with a nylon bolt. ie. theres very little or nothing holding the wings on other than the wing tube. Seems to me like this needs to be reinforced.
Thanks

spinner11,
I still have to install my ailerons and aileron servos so I haven't checked the CG yet. I added another layer of 1/8" ply inside the fuse where the nylon bolts go. I did not like the looks of that either.

Sounds like you want it beefed up, I know what you mean though, I just put some carbon fiber strips on my 44" Foamy Electric 3d plane, although probably didnt need it, the carbon looks nice at least hehe.

Yeah, I feel that they get a little caught up in making an ARF as light as possible, to the extent of skimping in the wrong areas at times. Maybe it's just me. I highly doubt that even 5 or 6 ounces of extra wood will matter in a plane of this size. I also added some wood to the fuse sides for mounting all the switches as there is not much room to cut them in otherwise. Even with the added pieces, rebuilding the motor box, constructing a fairly beefy mount for the pull-pull rudder servo and 5-cell packs it looks like it should come in right at 23 lbs.

Hi All,
Did anyone strengthen the firewall? I have mounted a DA100...
And what did you do to remove the stabs quickly? I am using the Hagar 9 hardware kit and the linkages is very "permanent"...
thx
Jean

RE: New H-9 Extra330S
I moved the servos into the stab halves and cut holes in the fuselage to accept the wires. pretty easy to do. There are heavy balsa support pc's that run along the tubes that provide a lot of support for one end of the servo, the other end you just fit a pc of light ply from rib to rib to screw the servo in. You just have to be brave enough to start cutting another option is to use the dubro harware links http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDCU2&P=0 and use a removable pin for the clip

RE: New H-9 Extra330S
Has anyone installed a DA 100 on this bird? If so could you please post a pic of the engine installation. Is the only drawback that the spark plug caps have to be cut out?
I'm seriously considering tapping the buy button on this combo and would appreciate any DA 100 install info.
Thanks

RE: New H-9 Extra330S
A flying buddy brough his fuse over after we'd talked about it on the phone. I'm putting the fuselage on a diet. The aluminum angle and bolts / nuts that are used on the firewall and landing gear rails are 8.9 oz. Didn't like the firewall setup AT ALL so I yanked the aluminum, pinned the firewall, filled the GT80 mounting holes, and epoxied in tri stock on the inside corner joints. I used Kevlar tape on the outer corner joints and backed up the tri stock with 2" wide fiberglass tape. Saved a few oz there and I'm sure that it will prove to be more reliable.
The landing gear rails look like the 'easy way out' for the factory (just like the firewall). I'll most likely make some carbon fiber angle and epoxy / key them in where the aluminum rails were. Should save another few oz. This and the firewall mods should knock off at least 6 oz.
Saw alot of foam under the hatch and in the landing gear cover that could go...another 2-4 oz. probably. CF gear and wingtube / tailtube should knock off at least 14 oz. So.....hoping to save about 1 1/2 to 2 lbs on the plane.
The plane will be powered by a BME 100, 8611 for rudder, 5945s for ailerons and elevators. Hoping to bring it in around 22 lbs. Sound like a winner?

TT2, sounds like a winner for sure. Could you please post some pic's of your weight saving mods, and Firewall Beef up? Im going with the DA 100. From watching the H9 Cap 232 powered with the DA 100 it is going to Rocket out of Tourqe Rolls and Hovers! Cant wait to get this one.

RE: New H-9 Extra330S
I have done these bone stock (over n over )- with 80 single -8411 servos and a JMB can - 23 lbs -
I also just did the new EDGE -w/DA100-- 13 exact - stock all 8611 servos
also have the CAP stock wZDZ100 . 23 lbs + a little
8411 servos.
You can save a few ounces with a CFwing tube - I change stock LG to one I make for myself from 3/16" 2024 T3 -or 6061 T6.
these are lighter than stock and do not shatter like the CF stuff can in some cases.
If you go over 24 lbs with DA 100 -you have added extra stuf I don't use .
as for performance /cost / ease of installation etc., I'll take the 80 setup .
I also made a few for me and friends -with new wings/stab and rudder .
these are lighter and much more responsive -- 22+lbs
This is due to light wings and much thinner airfoil -so very light at the tips .
These H9 models are looked at by some as not "pro grade"
for the buck and with a very little tweaking, they are very capable .
If you ar taking out weight - go to the stab and rudder - that's the weight you need to change with a light engine.

RE: New H-9 Extra330S
For my firewall in my Edge I glassed the outside and pegged it with 8 1/8" hardwood dowls and thin CA, plus I left the aluminum angles in. Should be strong enough.
Can't wait to fly it. It's sitting here staring at me.

RE: New H-9 Extra330S
Anyone willing to post pics of their zdz 80 single install including a kill switch or choke setup? Which did you use with this engine to kill the motor? Did you use one or two receivers? I have two PCM's for it but I would like to use just one and save on the weight. Thanks alot, Chris
