Superior RC 33% yak 54 build thread
Just picked up my new superior rc 33% yak 54 today.. This is a new company and guys let me tell you... This is TOP quality.. This is one of the few arf's I have taken out of the box with NO wrinkles what so ever in the covering..The sceme is beautiful oracover black and pearl yellow of high quality. Vinyl is already installed.. Here are some feautures
POCKET HINGES.. Guys this is where its at.. Clean scale hinge system with NO gap, no chance for flutter and over 60 degrees of throw.. Slides through phenolic tabs with a carbon rod and a bolt at the end.
ALL CARBON FIBER accesories are included. This includes landing gear, tail gear, spinner, wing tube, tail tube, and hinge rods.. No aluminum anywhere and great weight saving's.
Aluminum turnbuckles and all ball link, aluminum control horns included.
CANNISTER ready
Let me say the owner Richard is a stand up guy and is on top of his game on these airplanes. Check out www.superiorrc.com . It is always nice to see somthing new with innovations to the market.. I will be installing a braveheart 100cc twin from superior rc to test on this as well.. It will be here in 2.4 weeks so this will be a slow build until I recieve that and get a few other projects out of the way.I can't wait to compare this to my extreme flight yak 110..Did I mention the pocket hinges! So far upon inspection I a VERY impressed

Another thing I noticed today is each wing panel has cut-out for 3 servo's.. This leaves aileron servo set-up options. Another nice touch.. I think I am going to try one servo first on the middle bay.. Also Another nice touch I found today is on the horizontal stabs. there is a servo cutout on the very bottom of each stab for elevator servos, or you can install them on the inside of the stab. There is a cutout on the bottom for the servo arm if you run them inside the stab.. This gives the builder both options.. Well thought out..

Instead of going by the manual I started with the gear..BTW.. A new maual is going to be written.. I went ahead with the landing gear.. There are 4 blind nuts already installed in the gear block.. The CF gear itself needs to be drilled. This was a simple process by applying masking tape over the gear block.. Next I marked the holes with a marker.. Apply the masking tape template now to the gear. A few minutes in the drill press and it's done.

Next I drilled the holes for the axle.. Easy task as I just measured were they lined up,mark,drill, and done..I then installed the axles. The plane came with axles and wheel collars that are decent but I opted to use dubro steel axles and wheel collars I had on the peg board..

The tailwheel bracket is carbon fiber.. I like the design of this tiller rod as the stearing on the tailwheel is awesome with this set-up.. There is already blind nut's installed for the tailwheel bracket. Just screw it on and set-up the tiller bar. Drill a hole for the ball link into the rudder.. Slide the rod through and done..I did have to drill the bracket/nut mount for the steering tiller on the tailwheel bracket a little. the stock insert and nut for the steering tiller to go through was a bit short.. After I drilled it a little it worked great..

I put a couple bends in the tiller arm to get rid of the steep angle.
It's working great so far.

Started on the horizontal stabs this evening.. Like I said earlier, there are twon options for mounting the servo inside or outside. I opted to mount them outside. I cut the covering away and ironed the excess. Drill the servo screw holes, mount them, then I wicked some thin CA to the holes..I mounted the control horns, made up the linkages and the servo is ready for the servo arm.

an email requesting info on the 85cc engine but they have not replyed yet. Have
you seen any video of these engines? Maybe we'll have to wait until you get yours
for a report. [&o]

Started on the wings tonite.. I am going for the one servo option. I will be running one hitec 5955 333oz titanium gear servo per aileron. Like I said earlier there is a feature to run 2 outboard servo's per wing, or one servo with a cutout in the center of the wing. I want the simplicity and to save some weight. The ailerons have LITTLE TO NO flex when I apply pressure to them and to boot the pocket hinges have no hinge gap. So I felt confident in running this set-up. Just cut the covering away and iron the excess, drill the mounts for the servo, wick the wood with ca and install when dried. I had a hard time finding the hard point in the ailerons for the control horns and drilled one hole wrong.. I put a covering patch there and found a harder surface to m ount the control horn. I am going to talk with Richard about this issue. No big deal and can be refined. I did get the horn screwed on.. I like to use a straight edge to make sure the geometry is straight..

Got a reply from Richard at Superior, said the motors will be here
in two weeks. He's checking with the factory about headers for
these engines.
What's the width of your cowl? My Pilot 33% cowl is 11 1/2 in. which
may be a little small for twin engine. Thinking of using the BH 85cc
as this plane was design around the DA 85.
Looks like the plane will be finish real soon , since a lot of
your work is done already. I also plan to use only one servo
per panel on my Yak. It also has the option of three servo bays.

Got the rudder servo and 4" swb arm mounted. Made up the turnbuckle/ball link's up and screwed them on the servo arm.Make sure you use the supplied washer on the top side of the ball link.. All the included screws are allen/hex type and include nylock nut's.. Had to drill the turnbuckles out a little to run the pull-pull wire through them. Also had to drill the burrs out of the crimp fittings to get them on the wire properly. There are two small open bays on the rear of the fuselage that worked out perfect for the running the wires out to the rudder

Went ahead and mounted the cowl tonight. There are blocks with blind nuts pre-installed. The included bolts also have washers and nice rubber o rings that compress to the cowl when mounted. These should help out with vibration and keep the holes from enlongating. I used masking tape and a marker to mark the cowl. Just attach the masking tape behind the cowl, fold over to the mounting blocks and mark the hole with tape. Then remove the cowl with the tape attached and your holes should be lined up to drill. Use a small bit and drill a pilot hole. If you don't drill a pilot hole the larger bit will slip and throw off your hole. Then drill the pilot hole with the appropriate bit. I drilled two first, mounted the cowl with the two bolts and marked the rest of my holes to assure allignment..
