Default Any tips on spraying Lacquer?

I purchased gloss black, thinned it 50/50 with a good quality thinner, and started spraying. I have an HVLP gravity feed gun. The problem is it comes out orange peeled. Tons and tons of wetsanding!

How long after I spray can I sand?
Thanks,
--Rick

Rick, if you are going to respray it, you can sand after a couple hours, but overnight would be better. Overnight also if you are going to try to polish it. You can thin it out more than 50/50, just be careful to not overthin it. Thinking back, it seems like I used to thin it 125- 150% when I sprayed it on cars. That was a loong time ago, almost 20 years. Thank God for basecoat /clearcoat polyurethane!
Good luck,
Rob

If lacquer is like dope it should get smoother as it drys . Had a old auto painter tell me that if you can smell it don't mess with it . It dries from the outside down & what may seem dry is still too soft to work with . Be patient. MAX H.

try thinning it about 75-85%, spray in thin coats. If you hold the gun back to far you will get DRY spray and lacquer doesn't lay down with time, it dries to fast and that doesn't allow the paint to FLOW like enamel based paints. When thinned more you can sand it much sooner. I've wet sanded in less than an hour before so I could finish shooting the car.
