1/3 scale: Hanger 9 Cap or Sukhoi ?
I'm looking to get my first gas plane. I was considering building but don't want to put the time and $ into my first plane over 25%.
As far as Engines go, on one hand I thought a ZDZ 80 would be a good choice. inexpensive and easy to sell when I move on to bigger planes( Not sure if it has enough power for unlimited vertical and to pull out of a hover with authourity though.)
On the other hand a DA-100 or BME-102 would be all the power and then some and I could use it on my next plane.
Anyone with experience with these planes and engines please give me your opinions and experiences.
Thanks.

I've gotton alot of input on these aircraft, and even though the Cap is a fantastic bird, the Sukhoi is actually the better flying aircraft.

Choices
I think you will find the ZDZ80 to be more than enough motor for any plane in the 20-30lbs flying weight. I have a ZDZ twin in my H9 Suk and even though it does not have the power of the single it is still plenty of motor. A H9 Cap or Suk should be around 23-24 lbs with the single. I know the single will hover a 24lbs Cap at about 1/3 throttle and jump out like a rocket when the power is added. I think both the Cap as well as the Suk are great airplanes and it depends on which one you like the best. The flying will be close on them both. Quality is great on either plane.

H9 Cap/Sukhoi
I have both, the Cap has a 3W100, vertical is awesome. The sukhoi has a 3W75, it has plenty of power to get out of trouble. Both are great ARFs, worth the money. I would hate to think how many hours it would take to build either one.Ralph

Cap's 'da bomb!
I haven't flown the H9 Sukhoi, but I have the Cap232 with DA100 power and the vertical and 3D ability is just phenominal. I am not a 3D'er, preferring precision aerobatics, but in the right hands the Cap is capable of outrageous maneuvers. From my observations, the old BME102 is about equal in power to the ZDZ80, but the BME102 Extreme and the DA100 are in a class by themselves(before I get fried here, let me state for the record that I haven't seen the capabilities of the newer light weight 3W 100 cc engines).

TR's at 1/3 power.
One big difference in putting the 80 in it over the 100's is the added weight of the 100's
Mine flies at 23.5 pounds.

I suppose it all depends on the type of flying you are planning to do. But even at that a friend of mine is flying the H9 Cap/ZDZ 80 single and does all kinds of 3D.
I using the ZDZ twin in a Great Planes 330 and it flies great, but I'm not into 3D.
The ZDZ 80 single will give you to biggest bang for the buck.
As for 100cc twins, you are still going to get the biggest bang for the buck with the new ZDZ 100.

I have both - ZDZ80 in the Cap and a 3W-100 in the Sukhoi. I love both. I saw that Chief has another run of Caps for sale. $729 I think. I'm not a 3Der, but a wanna be, and the Cap does it all. Nice paterns and excellent 3D. The Sukhoi is an awesome plane also. I love the 100 on it, however, it is a little heavy. "Don't tell the plane that though", it doesn't realize that it's heavy. What a joy to fly. I have more time on the Cap but I'm learning to love the Su-31 just as much. I took the H9 crap off and used SIG 1/4 Scale Cap231EX Breightling decals and it looks great.

Wayne,
I am thinking about getting the Cap. I would like to try some local SCAT events with it.
Have you tried any sequence flying?.
Does it have much coupling in knife edge flight?
Are the down lines vertical?.
Do snaps over rotate?
Lenny.

Diesel
I can't and won't try to speak for Wayne but this is my take after a summer of the Cap.
I flew 4 IMAC contests with the Cap and 1 with the SU-31, but only "Basic". This was my first year. The Cap flew better lines than my ability and there were no snaps in Basic. I can't say that it doesn't over rotate but it probably is very managible in capable hands. I have a 35% Carden Extra that I plan on flying in Sportsman this year and will use my Sukhoi as a backup. I plan on using the Cap to learn some 3D. It Harriers, and Waterfalls beautifully and Knife edges are great (especially slow ones) and requires very little mixing. I'm not much of a Torque Roller but I'm gonna learn. I need to change to a digital servo on the throttle ( the ZDZ is a real powerhouse and pulls out at the touch of the stick) I need finer control of it.

1- Yes I have done a little with it. However I just got the plane as it was getting cold here so I probably only have 20 flights on it or so. It seems like with some mixing it should be a very good sequence plane.
2- It couples to the wheels in KE. I have some mixed out but am still tweaking.
3- Yes
4- The snaps tend to go very deep if the elevator isnt used at a minimum. I dont think it over rotates though. Your finger will learn when to get out of it.
Where this thing shines though is in its 3D ability....... Absolute rock steady harriers and elevators. The walls are incredible.
Parachutes are also very solid. It hovers and TR's really well.
I am really into 3D and this plane is outstanding at it.
A friend of mine has the Sukhoi but I havnt flown it yet. I am looking forward to comparing the two.

Thanks
Thanks for all the input guys. It sounds like I can't go wrong with either plane and that the ZDZ 80 is all the engine I need. I can save the difference towards the next plane.
Does the ZDZ 80 fit within the cowl on both planes? I'm not to keen on it sticking out. any pics with or without the cowl would be great. any tricks on the install?

thanks, nice cap!
cool pics and nice setup on the motor. doesn't look like it sticks out too bad. I guess I could mount it sideways if I get picky.
Anybody know how it fits in the sukhoi? (ZDZ 80) I have a line on a sukhoi but if it doesn't pan out I'll get the cap. chief does have the cap for $729 - $29 if ordered by a certain date, so $700 shipping included.

If your like me you'll lay awake at night wondering how a specific motor will fit in a plane...
I am going through that right now on a giant Decathlon......
Pics from someone that has used that combo before always helps.
