Horizon/Hangar 9 MB339 build
A friend contacted me about building his new MB 339. I said yes and here we go. Starting with the stabs and vertical hinging. The surfaces are covered with Ultracoat on an open bay horiz stab. Carbon fiber root rib. Construction is very nice.
I lubed the hinges with some grease to prevent sticking.
For the glue I use 30 minute epoxy mixed with milled fiberglass. My thougt is the epoxy is fluid enough to run into the hinge pocket when I put it in. I then put a thin layer on the hinge, insert it, clean the excess epoxy and turn the surface to allow the epoxy to flow back towards the hinge pin to make a good bond.
Today did the elevators, rudder and ailerons. After the epoxy cures I will use the same technique to attach them to the wings, stabs and vert stab.

I've been wanting to see a build thread, there's a thread over at RCG, but everyone on that one has gone radio silent. I got mine the end of May and work has had me so slammed the only thing I've done is take it out of the box, and the only reason I did that was the box was in the way.

This morning we took WIKDFST for a "spirited" drive to Little Switzerland, NC with 2 Lambos, a GT3, 944, Lamborghini SUV, a C7 Z06 and an assortment of other cars. After lunch I came home and did some building.
Got rudders, elevators and ailerons mounted. Tomorrow I will mount flaps and the control horms.

Sunday update. Preped the control surfaces for the horns.
Next I assembled the ball links and installed on the horns.
Finally I glued all the horns on the ailerons, elevators and rudder and set aside to cure. Have some things to do around here today and postponed the flap hinging until tomorrow. Will get that done and start installing the servos on the mounts.

Got an early start today. Flaps hinges. They work very well.
weird hinges
same epoxy and milled fiberglass slurry.
filled the holes with the epoxy and inserted the hinges. I left a small fillet around the hinge.
all lined up in a row
effortless movement
nice alignment on the flaps and trim.
Next step is to mount servos.

I considered a Vette, the C8s are absolutely gorgeous cars. I've had 3 Vettes( 2 C5s and a C6) so I have an idea what they'll do. Hellcats are an absolute beast in a straight line. I'll probably beat you in the sprint to the first turn, after that I have no doubt I'll be looking at tail lights. Thing is I can do it with the wife and the 3 grandkids along for the ride, hard to do that in a Vette Reminds me of the old F16 vs B52 joke. An F16 pulls along side a B52 and starts razzing the B52 pilot on how much better the 16 is. The B52 pilot says wait one. A few minutes later he comes back up and says top that. The 16 pilot says top what? The 52 guy says I just shut down one engine, got up and stretched my legs, used the toilet and got a cup of coffee. Both are great, just indifferent ways.

Belonged to my dad, who sadly passed away last year, but MAN, it was fun to drive! Got to take it out on a few spirited runs..so much fun in the twisties, braking is awesome and the sound when you step on the gas is addicting.. would love to have my own someday.

Back to airplanes. Aileron, elev, rudder and flap servos all installed. Thought the flap would be difficult but they weren't. Still waiting on the extensions, should be here tomorrow
Flap subtrim zero gives you t/o flaps. Up and down adjusted with end point adjustment.

Very productive day. Nose gear installed. Fuel tank assembled.Starting on the fuselage tomorrow. Not a lot to do there, install tank, pipe motor and retract controller. Route wires, install vertical and horiz stabs. Do t anticipate any problems having this finished on or before the promised date.
Nose gear and steering servo installed. The servo was a bit difficult as the mounting lugs didnt match holes in the mount.
Got the rest of the fuselage unpacked and started my game plan. I thought the fuse was composite but it is some type of molded foam covered with ultra coat. Lots of cf laminate formers. The fuel tank is blow molded plastic with a neat little aluminum frame which screws onto the tray. I'll get some more good pictures tomorrow as I continue.

Big event today. Got motor, pipe, UAT and fuel pump mounted.
Fuel tank mount. I put a little Goop on frame to keep tank from sliding.
Kit supplies vent and fill
Servo extensions still MIA. I'm stuck until they get here.

I've finally been able to get something done. I glued in all the horns on Tuesday and after trying once again to get the ball links and hinges up to standard I gave up and dug into my Dubro and Robart stashes. I got the servo slots cut and hinges installed on the elevators and rudder. With any luck I'll be able to do the same thing with the wing tonight. The 3/16 Robarts are a bit smaller than the stock hinges, but the Hysol was thick enough to fill the gap so that I don't think that'll be an issue. One thing that did bug me though, the top hinge hole in the rudder wasn't drilled straight, it was centered but not straight. Not a bid deal, but I had to cut the last barb off the hinge point so it wouldn't hit the covering.
