Default Tom Cook F4 Phantom help!

Hello! I have this Tom Cook F4 Phantom that I need a little help on! I think I read that it's 1/8 scale, but I can't seem to locate a canopy and cockpit kit for it - does one exist? Additionally - I have never built a jet - or attached anything to a fiberglass fuselage. I have the stab, but how would you mount it so that it blends 'seamlessly' into the frame?

Additionally - as I mentioned, I've never built a jet. Hell I've only done one kit - so if anyone has an recommendations on anything - please help me out! I've got a smaller George Miller F4 as well that I'd like to hang in my sons room - when that kit gets done as well!

Hi,
That sure don't look like a beginner's project.
Good luck with it!

The Cook Phantom has been out of production for over 20 years. It was briefly manufactured and sold by Desert Winds Aircraft after Tom sold them the rights to the plane. A canopy is going to be almost impossible to source unless you can find another F-4 kit in a similar size that is still in production. I have been building glass and foam kits for 30 years and this is not an easy build!
Tom's Phantom is epoxy glass, so any good epoxy can be used to glue to it after roughing up the surface. I am currently trying to finish one up that I started 25 years ago.

Waiting for the epoxy to cure on wing and vertical fin joints.

I built my cockpit out of balsa and ply and glued pictures of the instrument panel on the face.

Gary keep plugging away. They do fly awesome. I flew one of twin fans and one on turbine.

bpaith...It is not an easy first plane to build but I wish you luck!!!

I Know!!
25 years ago I got the wings about 70% built and pushed it aside for a quicker build. It stayed pushed aside (in my attic) until this summer. Since the Covid lockdown I have completed a Sig King Kobra for my grandson, a 125% Turbinator that I started several years ago and a JMP T-33 that I tried to fly through a barbed wire fence several years ago. So I decided it was time the Phantom came out of the attic. I have 2 brand new OS.91VRDFs in Dynamax fans waiting for the chance to fly this thing.

I may have to slow down, now. I had a severe allergic reaction to the West Systems epoxy while fiber glassing the wing joint.

Thanks everyone! I located a canopy last night through some more Googling. Fortunately I found someone who can make the exact one! I have to give it a whirl - even if its a static display piece! grbaker Can you talk to me a little about how you put primer over the whole aircraft? My wings are currently sheeted Balsa, did you put a fiberglass over the top of them?

BPAITH,
Peruse this RCU forum, you'll find a wealth of info on glassing, composites, etc.
https://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/com...ion-repair-97/

I hope your project works out well for you. You can build and post your progress here and there's a ton of really helpful modelers here
to help as you move through your build.

Yes. All wood surfaces are glassed with either 1/2 or 3/4 ounce cloth using epoxy. There are lots of different methods to do this. The link myersflyers posted is a good source.

Bpaith, did you say you found a canopy or you found someone who can make one? Either way, can you pass on the info because I need a canopy too.

Thank you,
