Finally finished it and flew it!!



I finished and Flew it(Sunday)..... Flies awsome!


Final flying weight (24oz tank empty) 21lbs on my digital people scale (scale is in 1 lb increments)

H9 33%
ZDZ80 w/ supersonic pitts muffler
MSC 25-10 prop
no spinner / no wheel pants
TroyBuilt Lightening technics
CF wing tube/tail wheel/landing gear
24oz tank On center of CG mark
CG as per adendum at 13/16+3/4 behind CENTER of wing tube.
Pull/Pull single servo for rudder right behind CG in fuse.
Light weights wheels
(2) 1650 nimh with (2) MPI Miracle switches with 6.0V regs each
(1) 1100 nicad 4 cell for ignition
MS-81 hitec micro on choke...


Feels "light" in the air.. great glide!...

Still breaking in motor... its funny, in approx 4-5 feet it lifts of the ground!

Yes , it has good vetical... cant wait to finish first gallon... to start dialing it in.


On dead sticks It floats good... almost like a trainer...

I think my low end might be lean???? When I go vertical full power and go to low and let plane do a hammer tail... On the downline its ok ,but when i pull out to fly level idle goes low and shuts off... Again I have only flown 4 times so far...

Maybe your idle is set too low... Have you done any tweaking on the engine?

We played with low end A little.... we only did 3-4 flights max..

Idle was 1850-1950 and in air I clicked sub trim a few times higher just in case,
still happened...


This Sunday we are going to work on the needles.....


what rpm are you guys with ZDZ80's at?

Geez Loouise! With the exception of the spinner, gear, and wing and tail tubes you and I are right in line on setup, engine, muffler and all. And I needed about 1 pound of lead on the top of the motor box to balance???? And if I replace the gear with CF and remove the DB spinner, I'll be out of CG range again??? I find it hard to believe that the cf tail tube would account for the difference. And saving 2 pounds (I was 23 before the lead) by changing out the gear, tubes and spinner??
I am certianly not calling you a liar. To the contrary, I would LOVE to shed the lead and another pound!!

Did you move the wing back 2" as they suggested and if so, How? Would really like details on what you did.

Here are some Pics..

Wing was not moved back....
Keep in mind my flight pack is also light!
I have (2) 5 cell 1650 nimh packs, together they weigh 10 oz flat.
My ignition pack is a 4 cell 1100 nicad, that weighs 3.5 oz (all from Radical R/C)

No lead was added.

By lightening ALL wood frame this is what I saved:

canopy I saved 4.2 oz
bottom gear hatch I saved 4 oz
Fuse I saved 4 oz
Wing tube I saved 4 oz
CF Gear i saved 8 oz
Wheels I saved 3-4oz

Etc....

Went crazy making holes and reducing thinknes of plywood formers.
Mount Rx in front of wingtube
All batt packs All the way near firewall

I never stated I had a CF tail tube ... If you changed your gear, wingtube, drop spinner, I bet thats almost 1 lb right there. Eliminate that 1 lb lead and thats a total of 2 lbs! you would be 1 pound havier than me then. Dropthe dual elevator servos and lighten the plane and you could be where I am at.

MOVE everything FAR FORWARD!

Thr & choke servos are behind firewall in front of Rx.

Thanks for the details! I plan to start on mine this winter. Engine choice is between ZDZ80 and Fox 6.4 twin. Guys from Flights Unlimited Swear by the fox, and having seen theirs fly it is a hard choice to make. Slowly collecting all the incidentials necessary to get started. Your information will surely help.

Sorry for the miscue... You have the CF tail wheel, not tail tue... Got it. As well do I. I have not lightend the tail section any but I like your lightening holes. I think I will add that to my list. As well as taking some out of the hatch. I am planning to got to CF gear and wing tube this winter. I really want to lose the weight as I am going to add it back when I put a can on it. I don't know if it will net much more weight than the current muffler but it will be distributed differently. I have my choke servo in the motor box about 6 inches behind the firewall. My goal is to atleast lose the lead. I hate carrying around dead weight.

Joe,

I have a H9 1/3 scale Cap 232 with a ZDZ80RV and Bison pitts muffler.
A few things to pass on.
The motor turns approx 6700 rpm with a Mezlich? 26 x 10 CF prop.
I modified the muffler by cutting about 3/8" off the bottom tubes.
I did this so I could get better performance but keep the noise down.
I am also running the intake trumpet that RC showcase sells for this motor.
I have unlimited vertical, plane weights 24.5 lbs.
Have about 3 gals of gas thru the motor.

I just got a Sukhoi like yours and am trying to decide on a motor for it.
The ZDZ80RV is a good motor, but I think I will go with a twin.

Joe,

About the problems with the engine dying.
I have had similar problems with many dead sticks.
What I did to fix it was to set up an idle up switch on my
radio so that when in the air I would have the idle set
to about 1000 rpms higher than my lowest on ground idle(1900rpm).
For landing I turn off the idle up switch and I have my low idle
back. It works for me.

Someone told me that the problem stems from props that are too light
and not enough mass to keep the prop spinning at idle. You might try
a heaver prop.

Let me know what you find.

I dead sticked several times again... last landing I broke prop and damaged cowl... Cowl was fixed but I ordered a bambula 24x10 to continue breaking in motor as per the engine manufactor forum here suggested...

I will also try that idle up method to see if it helps...

ohh the shutting off is not going vertical but also does it straight line!
After 3-4 seconds full throtle and I got full low stick it dead sticks!
very annoying...

Hi,
I flew my dads new H9 Sukhoi Da100 powered yesterday. Flew superb...Flies for 9mins uses hardly any fuel...But you are not using alot of power....
I liked the model flew really well in the wind..
Everyone was impressed with model too..

The trouble is the smell of petrol fumes in the car...
Its either Jet a1 or petrol....Great combination!!!!!!!

That plane seems like the best bang for the buck in it's size. Chief has it for $599 this month. How much does it cost to do the H9 sukoi and ZDZ80 combo? I have read this info at troybuilt models many times about lightening. I fly a small TBM Staudacher that is light and flys awesome. Here is a link to that page,

Joe, even on my BME 44 I use a high idle on a switch. It works great!~) Sorry to hear about your hard landing.
