Default rc and extreme sports

I skateboarded for 6 years, and just quit because in the last 2 years of that I have broken/fractured 6 bones and had 2 bad gashes (one down the side of my face, and a hole deep enough to see bone in my shin) I was VERY good and all but I am also a smart kid, and I am only 16 and I don't want to ruin a possibly good carreer because I didn't know when to quit.

This also means that I am not going to ride skateboards, bikes, dirt bikes, 4-wheelers or anything anymore. The most I will do is skimboard. This is why I got into rc.

Now, one of my best friends is on my nuts because I am "wasting my money" on rc, and I am being a p**** for not doing extreme sports anymore.

I don't really know what to think or say anymore.....

What do you guys think of this?

I try to think that but it is hard.....
especially for me because of certain reasons that I don't feel like going into detail over..

but I do have 3 or 4 friends that think they are B.A.

I want to get a 5b just to show them how sweet they are but I don't have the money..
Maybe a King Motors replica!

Don't listen to your friend. Skateboarding is for stupid losers.
Why roll around on a board and hurt yourself all the time? And how long can you skate for anyway? You're going to be a 40 year old man skating?
Where as with RC, you can enjoy this for the rest of your life. Cars, boats, planes, helicopters etc.

And, in the end it's your money, your life and your choice. Stick to RC!

Dont buy an RC car just based on your friends. Is all you have electric? That may be why, as they think eelctric vehicles are like the Walmart toys. If you get a good 1/8 4wd nitro, or gasser they might think differently. But certently dont buy an RC car based on friends!!!

Tell him, " Lets see how many injuries by 40 you and I have!"

EDIT: I am halfway decent at skateboard (like mostly vert though). I built my own miniramp halfpipe to practice on (4 feet high, over $1000) and I really only used it for a year in a half. I got a bunch of small injuries, but decided I was just going to focus on school (havent got a B since! ) and RC racing.

Yeah all I have is a brushless vendetta st. I don't have money to piss into a 1/8 nitro, but considering the price tag on the raze st, I might be able to buy that

Haha you just made me remember something funny. I started skateboarding at 8-9 and was doing fine for about a year. I actually got my bro and dad into it, lol then my bro broke his arm doing it and my dad broke his middle finger. I decided to call it quits cause I'd rather stick to biking and the worst I've done with that is put a hole in my knee (same as you, I saw the bare bone- only 6 stitches though) and cracked up my top front teeth doing tricks with a bike. I'd say stick to the sports and keep R/C as well. I actually want to try skateboarding again, I'm 17 and my best friend does it and hes awesome at it, makes me want to try again. R/C's are good clean and (for the most part) safe that you can do any time. Mix it up and do both. Personally, most of my friends have no clue I work and drive on toy cars (well, thats what they are in essence...), and honestly I'd probably get laughed at. But until some of them actually see them in action, they are like holy crap thats friggin cool. So its up to you to make the decision, R/C is very expensive- for the cash I've spent on my cars and projects, I could be rolling around in an Iroc Z Camaro (my dream car)- but I'm building a 1/8 model of it and saving for a real one at the same time, so its all good![8D]

I think you should save and step up to 1/8 nitro, its too much fun- especially bashing with others!

^ True, Spetz's post was pretty close-minded in that regard. Like it or not, skateboarding is a sport just like anything else. I know a lot of adults hate it cause of people using public property to do it, but its just part of the mix.

Skateboarding is for stupid losers.
Quotes like this are just unneccesary. Look, I'm not into skateboarding or other extreme sports but I'm not going to call these people stupid losers. They take a great of amount of skill and are deserving of respent for that. I read an article lately about used cars to avoid and the author said to avoid camaros because trashy, rock-n-roll are the only ones that buy them and don't take care of them. Idiotic generalizations like this serve no one and only make you look stupid.
With that being said, if you like RC do it. Anyone who turns their back on you just because your giving up the sport and want to try other things aren't your freinds. Let them do their thing but don't let them stop you from doing yours.

That ticked me off as well. I couldn't find an address to email the SOB. I've owned several Camaros and Transams and always took excellent care of them. But just like any car there are always people who don't take care of them.

I got a story to tell you, There is a guy who does R/C now because he lost his leg in motorcross.
I really feel sorry for him, and last summer he was Skeedooing or whatever they call it and suffered 3rd degree burns all over his body.
He has completly healed but has told me that he'll never do motorcross again.
Now he does R/C and loves it. I told him im glad you decided to do this instead because it's much safer.
And yes skateboarding can be just as dangerous, I watch shows all the time showing the injuries people have suffered doing silly stunts.

I've been four wheeling, dirtbiking, or doing some kind of wheeling for the last 5 years and I've never had stiches or broken bones because of it. Its only dangerous if you make it dangerous.

You could try trial biking. It looks like a blast and if you fall it probably wont be very far or fast.

hands without shadows has a point. i enjoy extreme mountainbiking through rough terain and its a blast... i've never broken enything (while mountainbiking) and can say for sure that it has a large amount of skill and tuning involved. you have to replace tires quite often though....

p.s i also think skateboard isn't ideal for anybody serius. i mean why spent all that time hurt when you can be having fun???

Ok let me rephrase that, skating for fun/exercise (roller blading and so on) is fine
But I mean those idiots you constantly see on youtube getting insane injuries from trying unbelievably stupid stunts.
What is going through their heads?

I was reading this thread and some of the comments and would like to add my 2cents. The most of my injuries over my life are job related like lifting stuff that you know is just too heavey to lift, not taking proper precautions with power tools, not wearing proper safety equipment when I should have. So my suggestion to you is whatever you decide to do, make sure you take care of your body because when you get older you will start to feel the pain from these injuries.

Maybe some of your freinds should try R/C I bet they would love it. Planes, Heli's, Boats, Cars (on-road and off-road) there is something for everyone. And for some of us it is an addiction. R/C can teach you a bit of mechanical and engineering skills, anyobody could benefit from that.

Let your freind try it...bet they will eat their words. It's fun for everyone, young or old!

Just my 2cents,
Roger

I used to be big into skating in the late 80's and 90's. I was also into monutain biking, fourwheelers and street bikes but now that I am starting dental school I had to keep my injuries minimal but I still have that action sport addiction. When I used to skateboard, I can not remember a time when I was not injured, I was limping and it casts and bandages for about 10 years, luckely I only came out if it with a bunch of scarrs, some of my other friends were not so lucky.
