Painting plastic wheel pants?
Hello all, I'm building my newest kit, a Sig Somethin' Extra. This is my first aerobatic kit, so I'm new to some of the procedures, and tips are not given in the manual.
So, I need to know what kind of paint to use on the wheel pants. In the past, my records with painting plastic ahve not been good. The color is usually applied well, but it scrapes off easily with my fingernail. Is there some kind of special ingredient or primer or enamel I'm missing? I don't know much about paints, just glue and wood.
Thanks, Andrew

I have used Top Flight paint and it works. The Coverite Paint seems to work well too.
You need to sand the surface with 400 grit sandpaper to get it to stick.
After a day, it will set to be similar to latex. It will scape off easily. I find it takes a week for the paint to really set. A day in the sun helps. I have several cowls/wheel pants painted this way. My extra has scrapes and chips because I did not wait long enough for the paint to set.

As stated above, lightly sand then use a sandable white primer. I've used either gloss white lacquer or gloss epoxy enamel. Once it has cured for a week or two, you can take some of that purple trim and lightly iron on accent stripe to the side of the pants. Care has to be taken with the sock covered iron that you don't let it touch the bare paint. Those side strips really add a lot to the looks.
