Default GSP 80" Cap-232 w/Brillelli 60cc

I just started building the GSP 80" Cap-232. This is arf is inexpensive and it is this for a reason. You have to buy almost all of your own hardware. This is not a problem for me because I do this with all of my kits anyway. You do not get any labels or directions. You have to down load the directions and they are not very good either. If you are new to building ARF's this is one I would not recommend because of the directions and lack of hardware. Other than that the kit seems to be very well built and has a very good color scheme. The wings air built up balsa and covered with balsa sheeting. They recommend using robarts 310 hinges so that is what I used on the ailerons, elevator and rudder. I'll post some pic's tonight. One nice thing I found was a lite weight plastic tube in each wing for the servo wires to go through. This make installing the servo's a snap.

This kit cost only $199.00 plus 37.50 shipping. You have to watch your charge card statement becasue they made a mistake and charged me $80.00 for shipping and handling. I called them and there was no problem in getting that corrected.

Here are some pic's of the servo lead installation and Robart hinges used. I used the installation of robart 310 hinges that where described in the great planes 27% Cap-232 review. The servo's and extension leads where very easy to install with the plastic tube that is built into the wing. Here are the pic's.

Looks like a nice start Jim. That 60cc should be great on that plane. I'm going to keep my Giles 202 grounded until I can pin point where the glitches are coming from. Seems to be hitting the ailerons so I'm going to change all the extentions on the ailerons to the receiver. You should have gotten your 40cc by now, whats the update on that?

Zippi,

Scott got a little behind with the death in his family last week. He told me yesterday that he will ship the 40GT and the 60cc engine on Monday to me. So it will be another week before I can test fly the Giles-202 with the 40GT on it. I know you'll find the trouble of where your glitches are coming from. My last glitch problem was coming from a bad battery pack. It charged up OK but when you turned on the power switch some of the servo's where dancing it you know what I mean.

Here are some more pics of the build. The robart hinges that the kit recommends are harder to install than the CA hinges, but by using Gorilla glue I think they will much stronger. This kit takes a lot of planning to put together because of the poor directions. But if you have built many ARF's before this will not be a problem. The kit is very well built and the covering is very nice. The only thing I really disliked so far was that you must epoxy in the fiberglass wing support into the fuselage, but this to is very easy to do. Here are the pics.

Zippi,

Just got an e-mail from Scott and he is shipping the 40GT and 60cc engine to me today. I should have them by Thursday. It would be real nice to fly the Giles-202 this weekend with the 40GT in it. I'll keep posting pic's of this build. I will have a video made of both the Giles and this Cap when I can get together with Bob who does the videos for me.

Zippi,

The whole stabilizer is part of the fuselage. This is really one nice built kit. To bad the directions are'nt any better. The reason this kit is so cheap is that you have to supply all of the hardware. That is not a problem with me because I usually replace the factory hardware any way. The 40GT and 60cc engines where shipped today. I should have them for this weekend to work on.

Jim - can you get weights of all the base parts from the kit, before installing radio/batts/motor? Would be good to see....

Aerobob,

I already have most of the base parts installed into the fuselage and wings. I am almost done with the ARF as far as the frame work goes. I will weigh the plane when I have the airframe finished less engine. I am hoping to keep the Cap under 15lbs. With the Brillelli 60 putting out over 30lbs of thrust it should fly very well.

Default RE: GSP 80" Cap-232 w/Brillelli 60cc

The Brillelli 60cc engine arrived and it is a beauty. The total weight of the engine with muffler, stand-offs, and CH ei is 4lbs 4oz. It looks like the total weight on the plane with all of the electronics and engine will be right at 16lbs. Thats 1lb heavier than I was hoping for, but my wing loading will still be at 29oz per sq ft. I'll post some more pic's tonight of the plane and engine. One thing I did like about this kit is that it comes with a beefy carbon fiber landing gear that looks like it can take some hard landings. I'm sure that is going to happen more than once or twice.

Well it is almost done. All I have to do is install the fuel tank over the wing tube and the throttle linkage to the carb. I want to install the fuel tank here to get it as close to the CG point as possible witch is 5" from the leading edge.

Here are a few more pic's

I am having to install 4 1/2" wheels to get the ground clearance for my Xoar 23x8 prop. The 3 1/2 wheels are just to small with the landing gear taht came with the kit. It does not give you the ground clearance for the larger props. I my change the landing gear to the gear used on the lanier 81" cap. It looks like it well work a little better.

Default RE: GSP 80" Cap-232 w/Brillelli 60cc

Yes I have flown the GSP Cap-232 and it is heavy at 17.5 lbs and the wing area is smaller than I first thought so it has a heavy wing loading. The landing gear is to short for a 60cc engine with a 23" prop and I have broken 2 props so far and with them costing $25.00 a pop it is a little expensive. I have ordered a taller landing gear from TNT Landing gear that should solve that probelm.

Once you get this heavy bird in the air she fly's very well. I do not do 3D I just like the looks of a Cap-232. The Brillelli 60cc has more than enough power for this heavy of a plane and the 3D guy's say this plane will 3D with the Brillelli 366GT. I well be flying this Cap again as soon as the TNT landing gear gets here.

Jim,

Have you been flying the Giles 202 with the Brillelli 40cc? Get some video of the GSP Cap-232 with that stump puller on the front. I have my 40cc installed in the Somenzini YAK 54 73" with all the tail surfaces epoxied in and the new CF landing gear on that I had custom made so I could run the XOAR 20X8 prop. I'm going with HS-5645MG digital servo on all the control surfaces. I'm in no big hurry, this was suppost to be a winter project so I'm way ahead of schedule.

Jim,

Well with a little bit of money you would be surprised how quick you can save a pound or so which will make a big difference.

Get a new spinner.. will save 3 - 4oz. http://www.espritmodel.com/
Get a CF wing tube from troybuilt that will save 4-6oz http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/WingTubes.htm
Get Titianium PSP axels and Kavan wheels from Troybuilt that will save another 3-6oz

Sinergy,

I will take a look into this items and see if I can take off any weight. I am afraid the spinner must stay. This plane is very tail heavy and I have had to put 13oz of weight into the cowling just to get it to balance at the 5" CG location. The carbon fiber wing tube and light axles and wheels will help. Thanks for the help.

Zippi,

The Giles-202 is fly flying very well with the Brillelli 40GT in it and I am getting very used to having all of the power. I will get some video when I can can for you, but Bob has had to go back to work and it is getting very hard to get together with him for the video.[&o]
