I am about to buy a lanier 87" yak, is it worth it?
I have seen awsome videos of this plane, it will be my 2nd giant scale plane. My first is a giant super sportster. anyway, a guy at my field has offered it to me rtf with digital and something core servos and a fuji 64cc engine. he says its a very smooth plane but can also be wild. He said that he spent over $900 just in servos. he want $1450 for it. does anyone think that this is a good deal?

I'll sell you mine for 1200. I have an Evolution 58, turning a MSC 24x8 prop 6300 on mine. Hitec digitals all around... Li-ion batteries... etc... $1200

well i was looking at it this way, if i go ahead and get this rtf plane, in the future, i can always get a better plane such as the EF yak. The only thing that i am worried about with the EF is the building it and the cost. Are the instructions on the EF yak good for a begginer giant-scale builder?

Lanier 87" Yak is really a 80cc plane. It will fly with a 50cc and a 60cc, but it really wants that 80cc. Its not necessarily heavy as many believe, its just mis-marketed ... as it has almost 1500 sq inches, and a typical 50cc plane has between 1100 - 1350 sq. inches of wing area. On YouTube you can see it flown with both a DA50 and a ZDZ 80.

Well, what are the advantages to the EF over the lanier? Will either of these planes be different to fly form .40-.60 glow planes rather than being more stable?
Sorry for all the dumb questions, i am pretty much a giant-scale begginer

I have a couple of planes for you. I have my 50cc Yak that I designed. It flies great! All you need to put in is the batteries and a receiver. It is set up with a DA50. Ht5955 on the rudder, Ht5985 on Ail and Ele. The DA 50 was just re-ringed and has 2 gallons through it. It comes with a 22b Vess for the break in and a 23x8 Mejzlick. 1 1/2" alum airwild arms. Hanga 9 titanium links with ball ends. The second plane is a aero works 87" edge 540. The wings have been replaced with a set that is 100 sq" larger. I designed a removable airfoiled elevator for it with the servos in the elevator halfs. That plane comes with HT5645 installed on the ele and ail. A HT9555 on the rudder. It is set up for the same DA50 on a standard muffler. I have a pits muffler for the Yak (also included in price).
The all up weight on the yak is 16 lbs 6 oz. The Edge is 17 lbs 12 oz.
The whole package is $1800.
I am in York, SC so if you are interested I could meet you some where to deliver the planes.

I am in the same boat as you. I am 16 a job that I got a couple of weeks ago. I really want to get into the bigger stuff. I am thinking about the wild hare extra. Its not to expensive but not to cheap, and a lot of people like them (around $419). If I had the money I would get the EF extra/yak in a heartbeat. I love the looks of those 2 planes. I am also thinking about going with a DL instead a DA just because of the cost. The DL is $390. Again if I had the money I would buy the DA.

the quality of the EF yak is hands down the best i have seen in a while and just look at some of the videos it speaks for itself but i have to say not trying to be rude or anything but if you dont have the money to properly equip a big gasser then stick with smaller glow planes its not worth the risk

I Think that i am capable of flying any of these planes but i am just not sure if i am capable of building them. I know almost nothing about gas engines. If i set my mind to it i could probably scrounge up enough money to get the EF but i am terrified of the build!

Very odd... I know I responded to this before I left this morning??
ANyhow... I have flown this bird several times.. Fuji isn't going to do it any justice at all. This plane is heavy to begin with and now someone decided to put a heavy underpowered engine on it.
Better to wait and buy something better for that money. Honestly I wouldnt recommend the plane to anyone who was looking into 3D. Can you fly 3D with it? Sure... but I was also flying 3D with a GP Patty Wagstaff.. it was doable but once you get on a real design you wonder why you wasted your time

I can save up enough to buy anything I want! But there is nothing wrong with a WH and from all the things I read there is nothing wrong with DL a lot of people like them. I would love to have an EF plane but I can always get it later after flying some of the others. And another thing, if I spend all that money on the top of the line plane and parts like the DA and expensive servos I still have to buy a trailer. The last time I checked those were not cheap eaither. If I get the WH I know I can get it to the field which is what counts. Just because I will not have the top of the line plane and stuff to go with it doesnt mean I and everyone else that doesnt want/cant spend a lot on an plane will not have a good flying one.

The WH Yak doesn't even compare to this plane or the EF in sheer size alone. It's all wing and no fuse... actually a lot smaller than the extra or the edge. Flies ok but you really can't compare it to the EF in any shape or forum... they are not even close to eachother in performance or size.
Not knocking the WH.. I have owned a bunch, but there is a big difference between what is being talked about. If you were going to open the door to WH the last plane I would recommend is the Yak... The Extra/Edge is a way better plane.. thats about all I would look at in the 50cc range.... the newer sukhoi may fly ok (have 2 at our field) but the fit and finish is lacking compared to the Extra/Edge.
You don't have to buy top of the line... but in this case you are paying $1400 for $900 worth of servos
Edit: Rc- I just read up and saw you were looking at the WH Extra... like I said nothing wrong with it at all.. very good value for the money. Havent flown the new version but have the older and it was nice.. the newer is suppose to be even better!

rc-plane,
I have the 28% Edge and I have not regreted it at all. I take the WH Edge and the TOC Yak both out to the field all the time. Bill
