Hey there - I am so new to this hobby that I haven't even purchased a car yet! I am so lost it's not even funny. Is there anyone out there who feels like "mentoring" me and giving me a few tips so when I do go shopping for my new car/truck that I won't sound like a total newbie?

RE: :::New User Needs Help!:::
Thank you so much! Okay, I am thinking that I want something that can do something simple - say parking lots for now - until I work myself up to those beautiful monsters I see rolling around the quading areas.
As far as price, I think something relativley cheap but good quality for my first car - that way when I completely destroy it I won't be out a ton of cash!
The other thing I forgot to mention is I want to learn what each part does and how to build, rebuild and customize each car - not just make it pretty. Any tips?

The rustler would be a great car for you, unfortunately it comes as a ready to run. If your budget is higher I highly reccomend looking into a Tamiya, Losi, or Associated kit. You will have a blast with those building them. You would get to build and learn how everything works with a kit. The Tamiya Dark Impact, Associated Factory Team T4, and Losi MF2 are great kits. If your going to stay on-road, definately look into a Tamiya TT-01. They are cheap, and come in kit form so you can learn and build it. Tons of hop ups are available. If your staying on-road it would be great.

Now that you know that you want to stay on road for now, you have to decide electric or nitro. electric is easyer but you have the pain of chargeing the batteries. Nitro is harder to tune, it's smelly , dirty and noisy (thats why I love it!!)
Electrics have shorter run times because when a battery pack is dead, you have to stop and wait around for it to recharge.
As for nitro, you could run it for days, you can just top off the tank when it gets low.
Stay away from the RTR and build it yourself, or you will be clueless when repairing or disasembleing,
Look out for the cheeper "no name brands" on ebay, there's no replacement parts available, and there a waist of money (cuz you can't fix them) What ever brand you get make sure there's parts available for them. If you have a hobby shop near you, take a walk through and see what brands have the most parts avaliable

A good battery will get much longer run times, charging a battery is the equivelant of re-filling the tank. After all a combustion engine can only go so long, you re-filling is like re-charging the battery. A nice battery will run for hours on hand (12,000 mAh li-po).

Charging a battery is not like re filling the tank.
You don't have to kill the engine to re fill the tank.

This is what I would buy for a full set up. Plus...the truck IS a KIT!!! Have fun and work your way from that list.....that is basically what you will NEED to start. Most is high end and can be exchanged for lower quality for lower prices.

Ok seriously reagan WHAT ARE YOU SAYING? if your gonna give the guy crap dont even post it. this is his first hobby grade car, he odesnt need a radio of that cost, he doesnt need a Nicd for his RX aa's will work fine, therefore he doesnt need the charger, yhe has absolutely no need for a brushless set-up, THIS IS HIS FIRST CAR he needs somthing like a 19T, i guess thats a good car for a begginer, but there are much more durable cars, that he should have less time wrenching on and more time having fun driving, all he needs is a basic charger, and he msot certainly doesnt need 2 4200 Mah batts. He can get 2 if he has extra money. So basically everything you suggested except for maybe the steering servo is complete bull ****.
Now back to the question: Sorry about that car kitten, but once you get deeper into the hobby youl realize how ridiculous it is what he just said. I reccomend you get an off-road car becuase they are generally more durable, and can be drvien both on and off-raod and theya re alot of fun. If your sure you want a kit and arent gonna consider a RTR, then you should get somthing like a Tamiya Drak Impact, and a basic 19T motor, for a little extra speed and power, but you should get that fter you get used to the power of the motor that comes with it.If your considering a Rtr definnetly go with either the the Traxxas stampede, or the traxxas, rustler. there often considered the best begginer Rc car, there increidlbe durable, relieble, and loads of fun. Plus they come with every thing you need.
For your Dark Impact kit you should get these things:
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMFW1&P=7]Tamiya Dark Impact 4WD Kit $139.99[/link]
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXASX2**&P=M]Futaba 2PH 2-Channel AM/1 S3003 Servo $42.99[/link]
A Basic, yet very well working radio system, its very durable, and does everything you need it to. also its futaba which basically means its a quality product
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAVN1&P=7]MRC Super Brain 959 Charger $44.99[/link] Basically the msot relible charger out there. Its perfect for what your gonna be usng it for, and will charge your batteries well so they last long
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAXT8&P=7]DuraTrax IntelliSpeed 16T Mild-Mod Reverse ESC $49.9[/link]
This Esc might be a little more then you need, but trust me your gonna eventually wanna upgrade to a faster motor, and this esc will allow you to do so
well the battery pack really depends on how much of your budget youve got left. Basically the higher the MAh number the longer the battery will last.
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNCR1&P=0]DuraTrax 6-Cell 7.2V DTX4200 NiMH Stick Standard $39.99[/link]
One of these will give you about 20 min of runtime before it starts getting low. if you have enough money to gt 2 of these, then definetly do so.
Thats $315 and thats absolutely everything you need apart from a few AA's fopr the transmitter. And this isnt bottom of the barrell equipemnt this is all quality stuff that fits your skill level well, and should last you a very long time.

First take your Prozac and call me in the mornin' K?
Now back to the newbie....as I also stated above you can replace whatever is on that list I gave you for anything of a lesser value. If I confused you sorry about that. What my list entailed were the basic items needed....not necessarily the quality you can afford and you can exchange any item 1 for 1 for something of lesser cost. The brushless system could be replaced by a cheapie esc and simple motor if you like.....thats up to you. I will however say that when I began the hobby and shelled out several hundred dollars I would have preferred to know what some of the better items were so that I wouldn't be shelling out hundreds more for "upgrades". I myself would have preferred to have saved a bit longer and gotten the best quality items the first time around....because it would have saved me money in the long run.
Now back to your regularly scheduled program.........[sm=spinnyeyes.gif][sm=bananahead.gif][sm=confused_smile.gif]

if i even knew wat ditto meant maybe i could rspond to that.
Reagan, but why even suggest those things. He has absolutely no need for that. You make it seem like unless the car ends up costing you $800 it isnt fun. And posting stuff like that just makes newbiers think the hobby is too expensive for them. They dont know how to find the products they want, thats why there asking us. So he isnt gonna know what parts he can down-grade, and which parts are good for a begginer.

Why post what I did?? Why not??? Doesn't give you the right to attack me. I have barely been on this board a few weeks so I just suggested what I thought would be something he/she/it could look at. Just because he is a newb doesn't mean he can't afford it....didn't really say. I attempted to make a suggestion as he/she/it requested. I as well as you do not know this person or what they are capable of....it is not for me to judge. BTW....I might as wellconsider myself to be a newb. I have been out of RC for about 12 years. With a little research however I see what I would like to have and even as a newb I would consider buying the set up I suggested maybe with a smaller brushless set up.

A bit of basic editing would have saved the attack.
I completely ditto Rs43EVOman's suggestion.

oh yeh, theres a wee decision ur gonna need to make, weither to get a pistol grip radio - http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=LXASX3**&P=ML
or a stick radio- http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXCTD2**&P=7
(i didnt pick those two for any reason theyre just for examples)
The other one is elctric or nitro, which as u have seen can lead to fights lol, my sugestion is for a ver first car go electric, and learn all the basics with it.
