I am recovering a plane that has been covered before and I have some fuel soaked balsa and some areas were the monocoat adhesive is stuck to the balsa mainly on the leading edges possibly from CA glue being applied. I had used a sealing Iron to help remove some of the covering mainly the areas that had monocoat over monocoat.

Does anyone know how to get the fuel out of the balsa and the monocoat adhesive off the balsa?

Items I have on hand that I could try.
-Trim Solvent
-Isopropol Alcohol-(rubbing alcohol)
-DeNatured Alcohol
-Paint Thinner
-Xylol
-Acetone
-Carbo Sol
-Debonder-for CA glues
-Goof-Off-(removes latex paints)
-Paint Cleanup-(removes latex paints)
-Klean Strip-(removes Varnish, Laquer, and Shellac)

If none of these work then what do I do?

To remove the fuel from the wood I can suggest 2 ways.

1. Use K2R spot remover. Apply it, let dry, brush off.

2. Sprinkle the area with talcum powder or corn starch. Rub it in. let dry and brush off.

Either way will require several applications to get the fuel oil out of the wood.

For removing the CA, either sand it off and fill the area with a lightweight filler, or you can try acetone. Acetone will soften and disolve CA, however, you will need to keep the area wet with acetone.

Acetone should remove any monokote adhesive residue also.

Campy hit it right on the the head. A little tip to help on top of what campy gave you. After you brush off the K2R use your heat gun on the bare wood. This will force more of the fuel out of the wood. Then apply the next coat of the K2R. Keep doing this until you have very little fuel being forced out of the wood. Be patient because it's going to take several tries to get it out.

I use the method Campy discribed. But sometimes if the plane is really soaked I will use my heat gun. Just hjold it on the bad section for a while and the fuel will come to the surface. dab it up with a paper towel and keep it up until it stops swetting. Then use the K2R or powder.

HEADS UP
I heard somewhere that UNFORTUNATELY K2R is no longer manufactured.
In fact, I no longer find it in the stores.
Un-corroborated by any other means.
If you prove me WRONG.....you will make me very happy
because that WAS the way to soak up fueled wood.
I also never found out which product substitutes for the missing K2R

Hey Guys, not to be rude - but this question comes up regularly.

"How to get fuel out of Balsa..." the answers are already here on RCU, do a search I just punched in the K2R and had my pick of dozens of threads, several listed web sites that still sell K2R - I don't know how current they are...

While not definative, I did a google on K2R and came up with the company website

They list retailers selling K2R. Maybe a call to the company will verify/kill the rumor.

The last time I bought K2R - bout a year ago, I found it at ACE Hardware. I hope the still carry it.
