RE: 80" Edge Kit - Any Build Threads
Bob, if you have the kit and the CD that comes with all OMP kits, that's all you need.
I've built many OMP kits. If you need the CD I could send it to you.

RE: 80" Edge Kit - Any Build Threads
I do have the CD, and thanks for the offer.
I just wanted to get ideas on what servos to use, and who used what method to sheet the fuse?
Does this size model need metal geared servos?
What's the preferred epoxy for sheeting the fuse?
I don't think I'm going to use PU on this one.
Thanks
Bob

The preferred glue is Gorilla glue. Check out the thread above on sheeting foam cores. Same process as doing giant scale foam wings. Yes you need metal gear servos on a plane this size. The Hitec 945s (or their new replacements the 985s) are a great choice.

The Hitec 5645MG has 168 oz of torque at 6v which will be more than adequate. Great choice of servo for this plane. The speed is only .18 so for the same price you could go with the 5625 and trade some torque for speed. Either would be a good choice.

I built one and electrified it (see my gallery) there is a bit of trickery involved in building the wings... you MUST follow the instructions exactly.. it is AWSOME in the air and lands like a dream

It's obvious that the kit CD manual and the current kit are different.
In the instructions it says to tape the foam fuse pieces together and sheet over the tape.
There is a picture on the CD of some glue on what looks like the canopy piece.
Which is the preferred method of dealing with the fuse, glue or tape?
Thanks
Bob

I followed the instructions on the CD and it turned out fine.. I used Gorilla Glue and placed car batteries, a jack, 2 x 50 lb sandbags and whatever else I had that was heavy on the sheeting as it cured.. turns out quite strong and light. I also built a 50" bipe from OMP that is the best flying bipe I ever had (still flying)

Yes I used a spray bottle like a windex one and lightly sprayed the wood, then wiped some of it off with a paper towel. The glue went on the foam side, then you make a sandwich on a FLAT base ( must be flat ) with wax paper. foam, glue, damp wood, wax paper, than I placed some flat boards on top of that then a LOT of weight, using anything I had in the shop including car batteries, bricks, a floor jack, etc.

The tape is just used to hold the pieces together while the glue dries but you still need to glue the edges of the pieces together. It is much preferred, and easier, to glue both sides at once and weight down the sandwich per the instructions. You build this fuse just like you would any foam core wing. Doing one side then the other is a good way to introduce warping or twist in the fuse.

RE: 80" Edge Kit - Any Build Threads
Are the battery and receiver locations in the written instructions where they should go?
I hate to keep asking simple questions, but the pictures show the receiver in a different spot, and the battery looks like
a smaller square type pack. Just wondering if anyone needed to use bigger batteries for balancing or anything?
I'll be putting the 1.60 in mine.
Thanks
Bob

There is a statement in the manual that indicated some of the pictures are from previous versions so please be aware of that. The battery and rx locations are correct for your kit. The 1.60 is my favorite engine for this plane.

RE: 80" Edge Kit - Any Build Threads
I think I might start another thread on this to get a quicker answer, but I'm a bit unnerved about the wing attachment instructions.
The plans show hardwood blocks for the root rib "R1" but give no size and I didn't find them in the kit?
Since the instructions are supposed to be more current than the kit, I didn't even notice that I needed them until I got to the part where I'm supposed to drill the hardwood wing mounting blocks to accept 6/32 through bolts.
OK, so now I have to figure it out for myself, find some wood and hope for the best.
I install the blocks through the sheeting and flush with the sheeting similar to the gear blocks, but they don't go all the way through the fuse foam like the gear blocks.
Much further down the instructions it mentions blind nuts for the wing attachment
Now I'm really confused.
What exactly does "through bolt" mean, and how did any of you use blind nuts?
Sorry, but I just can't grasp what I'm supposed to do now, or how the attachemtn is supposed to work.
Thanks for any help.

The blind nuts go on the ply root formers for one wing. To attach the wings, the bolts go through one wing root rib, through the fuse and into the blind nuts of the other wing. These formers come with pre-drilled holes in them for exact locations. You put the wings over the fuse with the wing tube in place and eyeball everything to ge sure they are level and firmly seated inside the wing saddles formed by the ply fuselage doublers, then mark the holes on the side of the fuse using the pre-drilled ones in the wing root ribs. Then remove the wings and carefully drill the holes. I used a drill press and shimmed the fuse so it would be flat.
The ply root ribs can also be used to mark the locations of the wing tube hole and the hardwood pieces and the holes for the wing attachments if you use them before building the wings but after building the fuse.
If you look at the pics on my gallery perhaps you can see this
I hope this helps
P.S great flying plane!!! P.S.2 take extra wing bolts with you on every trip, loosing one in the grass can be a permanent loss as they are hard to find!

For those of you using glo or gas, what is the consensus on using CA hinges?
Any maladies down the line with vibration and/or breaking the hinges?
Thanks

I've used CA hinges on this model many times through at least three different models. If installed correctly they work fine. Hinges seem to be a personal preference and each modeler tends to use what they are comfortable installing.
