NEW SO CAL JET FIELD!??
Since the southern CA guys don't have too many options anymore. I was just wondering what the AMA, if anybody, was doing anything about finding us a new location to fly our turbine powered jets at. This is quite a SORE subject after being RAILROADED out of PRADO without a pro-rated membership refund. I know I'm probably stirring the pot but if I don't,no one else will.
Just my 2CENTS.

RE: NEW SO CAL JET FIELD!??
I'm sure it's a top priority for the AMA to find a new field for turbines in SoCal. I think Dave Brown is drafting a memo right now in fact. Any new fields in California would be welcome by pilots of ALL types of aircraft. As a matter of fact I bet you could still fly prop planes at Prado if you wanted.

Ha Ha... AMA finding a field for you. If you're not looking for one, what makes you think anyone else is looking? I do hope you guys find something.

If any group has the resources to find a new field you'd think it would be you and your friends that exclusively fly turbines. The AMA will assist you and a call to them would be a good start but don't expect them to initiate the process.

Alas, the poor Tailwinds field. Like Rodney Dangerfield, it gets no respect! 600' of smooth concrete about an hour's drive from the Sepulveda Basin.
Of course, the off-field landings are a little rough.

Well, there are a bunch of options:
The Tailwinds - 14 North to Ave G, east to 10th East (Challenger Way), north 1/2 mi on right. They don't have a lot of overrun. We've had a least one BITW there (1996?), prior to turbines, but there's not much overrun and there's a lot of scrub brush. We did SAE Aerodesign West there 4 years in a row. I've done turbines there several times, but you have to have a reliable airplane.
The Marks in San Bernardino have two fields. George Manning keeps wanting me to check them out. At least one ought to be friendly enough for sport jets. There is, or was, a site at Norton.
The Model Masters have (or had) 3 fields, including the one on Rosamond dry lake - the original location of BITW in the early 90's. They were a UMA club (UMA now defunct), don't know what they are now. Technically, it's on Edwards AFB, but it's way before the gate. 14 north to Rosamond Blvd, east 5 or 6 miles to field on left.
There was a field in Perris where we did a jet together in the 90's - still there?? There is also a field in Hemet. We also did a jet together at a field in the river bottom at the intersection of the 605 and 210. Still there??
We've done jets at Gilman Springs several times. It's like operating off an aircraft carrier sometimes.
I doubt you want to try Whitter Narrows. There's always Sepulveda Basin. LA Jets did ok there this year with a heavily enforced altitude limit and Bob insisted on no smoke, so we didn't.
Of course, you're already using El Toro. How much longer will that last?
If you like to take your chances, you can go to El Mirage Dry lake. Rumor has it you have to pay to get on it now. Too many shoot downs for my liking.
Of course, you can always drive up and see us at Rabbit dry lake. There are at least 3 or 4 other lakebeds in use up here, but most all are another 30 or 40 min driving time except for the small one at Hwy 18 & Milpas Rd.
Cheers,
Rick

RE: NEW SO CAL JET FIELD!??
The norton field is still in operation as far as i know but they dont
allow turbines there, that field is also run by pomona valley flyers
who also run prado.
The perris field is still going and is run by the riverside club it is
a good location for jets with two exceptions that being the runway
is a little on the uneven side and currrently there is a lot of tall
dry vegetation around the field.
the corona club has two fields that are good locations for jets but
there runways are not paved, both fields are in riverside.
Gilman springs still has the lake water up close to the runway
currently a lot of float planes and some rc boats along with the
regular planes.

Dirt runways are ok, after all, that's where I do almost all my flying. John Redman says the dirt just polishes the blades. But the rocks are another story.....
Dougie, Riverside isn't that far from you! (unless you want to try that aircraft carrier thing over at Gilman Springs)

What you have to imagine is, first of all being Douglass E. Fresh, who now has Jet A running through his veins, and now feeling like the only way out is to go back to props?
Oh...I don't think so.
Jeffk464, that'd be like someone telling you that you could only fly a Hobbico Superstar for the rest of your life...Traxxis anyone?
Hang in there Doug...I know you're hurtin' for certain.

RE: NEW SO CAL JET FIELD!??
I have found some great places to put a new facilty. Its not real close but nobody would bother us. I started looking soon after a conversation with Sung a local jet guy. I havent heard anything since. If you feel so strongly Doug why dont you get started looking yourself? I know its easier to sit back and talk SMACK! You have a pretty short memory jets at Prado have been a fight form the begining you can thank a handful of crcja guys for their efforts and in the recent years well you know who has been busting his ass trying to get all types of aircarft at Prado. As far as a refund goes the club would have been obligated to refund your money if the club had put a ban on turbines but becase the county pulled the plug well bring out the ugly stick and enjoy. I too have been looking for a long time. In fact I have been looking for the last two years. I have found some possible sites, I just need time to go check them all out. Give me a call sometime during the week and lets discuss what you have found so far.

There are two closed landfields in riverside one is in west riverside
between the 60fwy and market st i think it is on county land.
the other is the old city dump and is located on tesquite st close to
the river bottom , it has been closed about 20yrs and would be
a good location for a flying field.
