Build a plane with speed 400 brushed?
Hi, a flyer getting out of the hobby gave me some electric stuff, a 1200 mah 3 cell lipo, an electrifly 12 amp brushed esc, and a motor that was on a GWS stik, for which the gearbox was trashed. I assume the motor is junk. I also have a radio kicking around. What is was wondering was if I could put together a decent direct drive speed 400 type plane with this stuff if I bought a graupner speed 400 motor, and if so, which motor. Needs to be direct drive-I don't like gearboxes, they always break on me. Plane would be 36 inch wingspan 360 square inch wing, conventional midwing symmetrical airfoil. Not a floater. What speed 400 motor would pull this with the gear I inherited, or should I just forget it and get a brushless motor and esc?

You can find three plans for direct drive 400 here:

Yes. You will get superior performance with a brushless motor. And outrunner motors generally do not need gearboxes.

If a 9"-10" prop suits your plane a 70g Suppo A2217K/8T on 3s could get you this:
9x5 GWS HD: 10.7v, 16.75A, 180W, 9840rpm, 46.6mph, 985g, 34.68oz, 5.47g/W
That's twice the input power you expect of a Speed 400 (and a 9x5 gets you a lot more thrust than the 5x5 you'd be limited to with the Speed 400). Add to that the fact that at 70g it will be lighter than a Speed 400 (80g) to boot!
