Default Question for Experienced Tuners

Hey Guys...

Got a tuning question.

I have my Savage X tuned very nicely... I think. Max temp is 250F.... tons of power... runs great bottom and top end. My problem is initial cold start. I could crank and crank for 2-3 min before it finally fires.

- Fuel is good quality and no air in the fuel lines.
- Glow plug is MC-59 and in good order... igniter is charged up
- roto-start is charged up and turning fast enough
- it's not flooded
- when it starts... I have to baby the throttle for the first 10 seconds or so or it will stall. Once I've kinda cleared the 10 second mark... it goes like mad and has no problems until the next initial cold start on a different day.

Maybe too lean on the low end?

Experienced guys help me out please!

Thanks, Kelly

Many engines are difficult to start when cold - even when they're tuned perfectly.

Richening up the LSN may help slightly...

The best advise I can give you is to turn your carb needles back to stock settings and adjust from there. I had to do this a couple time on my X. Could also be an engine air leak. Here are a couple of posts I found useful.

Are you priming it properly? Make sure the fuel is getting to the engine before you try to fire it up.

Yep... No air in the lines.... primed as it should be.

I'll try a few things tomorrow morning... but it's kinda odd how long it takes to fire.

Maybe not enough air is getting into the mix, sometimes i need to give a tiny bit of throttle to get it started.

I've tried no throttle... tiny bit of throttle... moderate throttle and full throttle. All gives me the same result... no start for a long time.

Fun Fun....

Maybe I have just the same as everyone else, but I'm bugged by it.

My thoughts exactly corona. I had to do that for the first time the other day as my savvy would not start cold either. Outside temps were moderate IMO but nevertheless..........

i think its in the priming, next time you try to start it prime it with the throttle at wide open.
i think whats happening is when you prime it at idle there is not enough fuel to light it up. just 2or3 sec bursts should do it.

Try leaving the glow starter on for about 30-45 seconds before you try to start it.
That will ensure proper heat to the plug helping ignition.

Yeah sometimes the plug has some oil residue on it and needs to be burned off.

I have never had problems, even in the cold. I just open up the carb a little when I blow through the tube.

Alright... it was 6 deg celcius... which is about 43F this morning.... I primed it as I usually do... then left the igniter on for about 1 minute. Then it took two 5 second roto-start spins and it was fired up! So it's all about warming up the engine a bit with the igniter.

Ran like a top today... finally got to use my new wheelie bar.... and I think I hit 3rd gear a couple of times. It was the first real run with the 3 speed. (last run I broke the rear pinion off my ramp within 10 min... and no spare parts. I like the 3 speed... lots of bottom end... goes like stink.

Today's thing is the Nova RC race clutches were hanging up... I think one of the springs unseated... they didn't seem very secure when I assembled it. (they're OFNA 1.0mm springs). So I'll pull the clutch bell and see if I can get the springs to seat a bit better. Maybe if I reverse the shoes... anyone done that?

Thanks for all the above advise!!

You could try using a little hotter plug. I run OS #8 which is a medium-hot plug and my Savage fires right up within 2 seconds.
