Default Behotec JB-180 Gold - Any U.S. owners-users..

Wondering if anyone in the U.S. has tried or owns and operates one of these turbines ??

If so, where did you buy it from ? (assume Altecare) and how is it working for you ? Fuel consumption etc....

Number of hours so far ?

Thank you

I have one and love it!

Bought it from Peter at Altecare. It is the Kero Start and I have had no issues. I probably have a little more than 10 hours on mine.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I have one in a Jet Legend L-39 and SM F-16

Got one up here in Canada. Going into an AD Scorpion. Haven't run it yet, but if it's anything like my Behotec JB-66, it will be an excellent engine.

Have a JB-180 Gold headed for install in a Yellow F/A-18 (and maybe a second for a Skymaster Viperjet).

What I can tell you for sure is that Peter at Altecare is an absolutely first-class guy to deal with. Will post flight reports when the weather warms up.

Hello,
Does anyone know the REAL maximum thrust of the 180 Gold edition? On the Behotec site it is 40.5 lbs and on the Altecare site it is 45 lbs.
Many thanks in advance.Etienne.

The certificate that came with mine from the factory said 186N, which is 41.8 pounds ... close to Mike's measurement (42.5 pounds). I have not measured it myself. FWIW, 45 pounds is more like 200N...

Mike, is that a raw measurement, or corrected to standard atmosphere? From the way you state it, it sounds like a raw measurement. These corrections for density altitude can vary our measurements by more than people consider significant differences between brands...

Hi Dave,
Its a raw measurement. We did it out doors here on a test jig. It was done at sea level, and around 85 percent humidity. Just as a side comment spool up was very good, about 1 second slower than manufacturers spec. Fuel consumption was about 10 percent above spec. Start up was very sensitive to battery voltage level, and the lines must be properly primed. I understand they have fixed the voltage threshold issue in their latest ECU version. Overall they did a nice job.

Hey Dave

My friend Tim bought one here from Altecare a few months ago and it runs great. Dealing with Peter from Altecare is a good experience, he has great customer service.
Thank you to Don Perry your thoughts on the JB 180Gold were right on.

Ran it on the bench about 88 F, 80% humidity 13 ft above sea level, we had 43 lbs on the bench. It now lives in a JL F-22 and it is quite impressive, Ill try and post some video in a week or 2, was having too much fun today to video.

Hi Mike

We also had some issues that Peter cleared up with a new pump, now it kero starts without issue. Please note you will need a 3S lipo to run the turbine, we are currently using a 3300 mah 30C lipo from Hobbyking. I believe it is the turnigy brand.

Hi Duke,
Their new ECU allows for 3S, although they actually recommend lower discharge rate batteries to prevent over current. (I could not get a good explanation on the why this was so). The previous version ECU had problems with the LIPO's.
All in all a nice engine.

I am afraid your statement is incorrect, there was never a problem with LiPo batteries on the ProJet ECUs previous or current.
All can handle any type of battery NiCd NiMh LiPo, LiIo, LiMg , A123 with no change to any setting except the low voltage alarm/cutoff settings.

3 cell LiPo or similar and at least 2,500mAh is recommended for Kero Start. The 180 Gold or other 180s use approximately 400mAh per flight, so you can plan your battery size based on number of flight you want to do at the field. In my large jets, I use 5000mAh, smaller ones, 3200mAh 3 cell LiPos. Large or small jets of course makes no difference at all the number of flights you plan to do decides battery capacity.

Default RE: Behotec JB-180 Gold - Any U.S. owners-users..

I can only tell you what Behotec was kind enough to explain to me. The initial ECU I received was very voltage sensitive and they recommended that LIPO's not be used. They advised that they had an upgraded version (which they provided to me) that would handle the LIPO pack but recommended low discharge rate batteries, which has nothing to do with the capacity of the battery, as you observed the capacity is trite, it simply affects the number of flights you get. Current consumption is a function of draw during flight and should not be confused with peak discharge rate of a battery. As I observed earlier I did not understand why a lower discharge rate battery would be necessary. To avoid confusion we are talking about the Kero start.
I note you are a dealer for Behotec, so perhaps you have a more indepth view on this.
As I mentioned before the engine is quite good; I had no operational problems with the initial ECU using NICADS as long as the voltage was maintained to a minimum threshold level, the LIPO driven system works fine, I hope no one is interpreting any of my comments as derogatory.

Thanks for the info, then it must have been that specific ECU but not the ECUs in general.

Hi Eicas,
On the team-projet.de website the battery they sell for the hornet ECU is spec'd at a 15 to 20 C discharge rate indicating by implication some degree of concern with over current. The pack is a 2500 ma pack, which would limit max current to 50 amps. Their power rating spec states 40 to 50 amps. Under certain circumstances such as a sticky" bendix" a start motor can potentially draw more current than originally envisioned by the manufacturer. I am less familiar with the current draw maxima on the kerostart element, but it is not small. Beyond a certain current level it is possible that the I/O circuit will not tolerate the surge. This may have been specified to accommodate this possibility and would cause a start failure or shutdown without damage to the ECU and I/O. If I am correct, then it would be appropriate to be mindful of the discharge rate of any battery pack you are using.

Niteman,

I just purchased a Behotec 180 Gold from Peter at Altecare for my Yellow F-18.

After doing some research online, I came to the conclusion that this is a great turbine and Peter is excellent to work with.

In fact, I couldn't find any negative comments about the Behotec turbines going back as far as 2005.

Joe

Glad to hear it Joe! So now we have to JB-180s waiting for maidens on Yellow F-18's for the spring. Let's hope the airplane gods are smiling...

I have flown my 180 on a Kingcat to get a sense of how it runs and handles ... it was awesome...

Peter at www.altecarerc.com does some of the service items depending on what they are and then the factory in Germany does major items (crash damage).

Turn times are very quick.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the report on your 180 Gold. This turbine should be a great match for the Yellow F-18; strong vertical etc.

I just started the build on my F-18, so I don't have much to report. I do plan to paint it in the Red & White scheme for better visibility; like Joe McBride's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoipfg8kGAk

The video seems to indicate that Joe M. is flying his on a 'single' P-120 (around 30lbs of thrust), not 100% sure though.

If that's the case, we should be in for a 'shock' at 45lbs of thrust - yeah baby!

Hello Don,

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I've been reading every related thread I can find on the Behotec turbines (in the US and Europe), which indicate the same positive response.

Incidentally, I think that I saw you at the 'Mississippi Afterburner' event last year? I was the guy with the Orange & light Gray Fei Bao Panther. What a great event; I had a blast!!!

Anyway, thanks for the support, I'll keep in touch and let you know how things are going as I progress with the build etc.

Joe, yes that was me with the JL L-39.

I flew down for the day in my baron. I'm planning on going again this year for the third time in a row. Are you going this year?

Was this your panther?

Don,

It's possible, but more likely I'm going to spend my vacation this year at the 'Super Jet South' event with the Georgia Jet guys.

However, if I can manage another long-distance event it'll be the Mississippi Afterburner gig; Vernon and the gang put on a top-notch event for sure!!!

Joe
