Both have benefits and problems associated.

Having a small motor is simpler, but they burn out quickly and aren't as useful as Heli size goes up. Also they are very heavy at the back.

Having gears is light and relatively efficient, but gears wear out and break.

Having a belt is presently considered optimal, but is quite complex and has a reasonable cost associated with it. Also, it can suffer from worn drive gears depending on the mechanism supporting it.

So far the belt drive system seems the best. But its normally only found on helicopters in the 400 size range, like Trex.
Most small micro helicopters like the blade, dragonfly etc....all have tail motors though.

I prefer the belt, for the most part it's matanice free, and will save money on tail motors in the long run. Also tail responce it much more sensitive as the servo changes the pitch very quickly instead of waiting for the tail rotor to slow, as well as it can do negative pitch. Go belt, it's better for the moment, or a btushless tail is really the best in all respects, besides the expensive side, if you have a motor on the tail go brushless.

huyvu98,
as well as looking at any individual aspect of model heli configuration, you should also look at what type of flying you want to do.
Are you looking to fly indoors? Big rooms avaialble? Or just smaller rooms?
Are you looking to fly outdoors?
Are you going to be flying with other heli pilots at a club field?

These all could lead to different heli choices. The best indoor helis (the ones that won't tear up drywall and furniture) are less suitable outdoors. The best back yard flyer is not so nice to furniture and nick nacks indoors. And if you plan on flying with other nitro heli pilots at a club field, a nitro bird might be the best for you.
