RE: 2.5 Easy Start or Pull Start
The pull start doesnt cost much, i think I payed $20 for mine. If you have your Maxx tunning down then go with the pull start. If you have trouble keeping it tuned stick with the easy start. I went to the jump start when I installed my Sirio and I think it is the best of both worlds. It has the light weight of the pull start (lighter actually) and the ease of the ez start. You really can't beat it for $45.

RE: 2.5 Easy Start or Pull Start
if you are having to pull the starter more than three times to prime the engine then you are running too lean on the low end . Now there are several ways to prime depending on convienence. 1. hold your finger over the pipe vent. 2. take the pressure hose off the pipe and feed with your mouth. 3. hold your finger over the carburater barral which with a 2.5 that can be a ***** at times.
But usually, if you have to pull more than a couple or three times to prime then you are too lean on the bottom end. I help run a local hobby dealer and been the mechanic for three years now, there is not too many engines i havnt worked on and i have found out how picky the 2.5 is when it comes to its settings. Best way to work out the kinks with your low end setting is to turn your high needle back to 3 full turns out and take your low end 1 full turn out from closed, that way it gives you enough play with the top to have the bottom too lean and not hurt the engine. now you work 1/8 turns out till you get it to start within one to 4 pulls after you find it then lean out your top neeedle one full turn and go from there, if anything you may have to fine tune the low a little more rich. That should fix your prime problem.
later!

Pull start gives you a fell for what's going on with your engine. E-z start means you better bring battery and charger to the field with you.

RE: 2.5 Easy Start or Pull Start
thanks backyardkevin, i think its taken so long for me to start my maxx b/c 1. its been 30 degrees outside in n.y. 2.my glowstart batt was low and i put a new 1 in and it started up in a few pulls 3.there is snow on the ground. do u think this is why its so hard to start it. i got my pullstart for x-mas and it was just as cold then so i never had good weather where it started up easily
will covering the exhaust prime it faster?, also will it make the bearing in the pull start slip?
thanks,
don

RE: 2.5 Easy Start or Pull Start
your weather does effect any engine, the colder it is the harder to run it but with that in mind.......90% of the time, the engine is still gonna start up pretty easy no matter what the temp but it may be a bit choked up in the mixture. If you run on a average cool or warm day, you typicaly have a 5 second delay between every 1/8 or 1/16 turn before you see or hear a difference, but on a very cold day you may have up to 10 second or 15 second delay so sometimes when you might think its not taking its adjustments it is you just go too fast.
If you get your engine pretty close to being fine tuned for most weather conditions then you wont have too much of a problem.another thing you can do and i do it myself coz my GT'S go where i go so i get in all kinds of weather. When you tune your engine to cold weather then write down your settings from where you started at and same goes for each weather condition that way you can keep an idea what your car needs to run properly and it does away with alot of guess work.
Overpriming your engine shouldnt hurt your one way bearing although if you overprime and your pull start becomes hard to pull then you need to make sure you stop there, remove your plug and turn it over a few times to release the extra fuel. Bad combustion turns to bad engine.
hope this helps you! later!

RE: 2.5 Easy Start or Pull Start
there is really no fast way, they are really all fast. Main thing you need to remember is this: you only need 1 to 3 pulls to prime if you have to do more then you are too lean (bottom) your bottom mixture actually means everything to me, i have the experience of seeing alot of ceased engines come in and alot of broken rods. All of these engines are 2 cycle and there is a difference and a term used thats very important to remember with the sounds. When your engine is at idle or high speed and it sounds really unmuffled or clear then its (2 cycling) but at a idle or high speed and its very mooshy, slow to descend, or just plain ugly sounding then its (4 cycling) and needs to be adjusted. those terms are used with airplane engines too but its used in the opposite form. airplane engines and car engines are completely different when it comes to adjusting. Another thing for the future, if you decide to get another engine and want to know the proper way for break in i have my own. i have broke in enough to find out that really there is no wrong way to do it except to take it out of the box and lean it out and run it wide open. What i do is this: i take it out of the box, i richen the top one half turn from factory and richen the low 1/4 from factory and i run the first tank at half throttle then the second i run all out if i want to just to get the heat to it. let it cool for 10 minutes. turn your settings back to factory and run anyway you want for one tank then you can start tuning your engine.

RE: 2.5 Easy Start or Pull Start
Im not a traxxas fan at all and they are very big seller and i admit the traxxas engines are very strong but you will never see me with another t-maxx as long as i live or if i do have one it will have a hyper on it(os) or a picco. The 2.5 is a great engine but its the hardest one i have ever seen to get adjusted and neither that engine or the pro .15 from traxxas will keep its settings. you will always be adjusting on it and you will i say again will lose your patience. Im a very calm laid back type of guy and i lost my temper too many times with the 2.5. Alot of my problems was not even making sense to me, i was lost till i read up a bit and listened to other opinions. some worked and some didnt and if you call traxxas they will just say you dont know what your doing...............lol.i have learned how to work with the 2.5 and the pro .15 but that dont mean it will keep its settings because it wont. i think alot of it is because traxxas engines run so much hotter than other engines and sometimes the slightest lean adjustments internally throws off the transistion of the engine.good luck with your maxx and if you need any help let me know.

Yes thats correct, be very careful with the bottom needle, alot of people think it just affects the idel and the low end torq, thats not right, it affects how the whole engine reacts.

RE: 2.5 Easy Start or Pull Start
<cough...lazy>
I voted ez start.
I love not needing a glow ignitor. Not getting blisters on my fingers. Sure, it sucks when the engine is cold, or when the battery dies. As far as not carrying anything to bash, I gotta bring the box o stuff anyway, might as well have an ez start and an extra battery.
I just adapted to the ez start. If i had to, I could use a pull starter (got one on my RS4...dont mind it much)

RE: 2.5 Easy Start or Pull Start
I totaly understand. I took the easy start off of my Maxx the third day out with it. I thought it was much easier to chase after the over turned truck with only the ignitor in my pocket. The pull start grew old after a while so when i dropped in the Sirio I switched to the Jump Start (roto start). I got spoiled using the starter box on my 1/8th scale...no more pull starts for me EVER!

RE: 2.5 Easy Start or Pull Start
I got the Pull Start and it now starts on the first pull. I kept the easy start to warm the glow plug and It warms it much better than an igniter. The Easy Start system is up for sale if anyone is interested.
