Cleaning gas residue from early 60's plastic control planes
Hello, I have a Wen-Mac SBD dauntless that is heavily caked with brown colored gas residue and it looks like its been there for 30 years+. The plane is missing parts and is hardly worth $50.
Anyways, I want to clean it up but I'm not sure what to use on it besides soap and water. I dont want to strip the finish but I do want to remove the heavy residue. The whole front half of the plane is affected. Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance,
-Nathan

If I were you I would try some of your wifes dish washing detergent. Just let it soak for a couple of hours in a stronger than normal mix. Might have to use a toothbrush on it also. Make sure detergent has degreaser. DOC Holliday

Simple Green full strength does a really great job on most things if its allowed to soak, its a powerfull degreaser that doesnt hurt plastic. Just make sure you keep it wet with a couple squirts every now and then, seems to creep under and lift most everything. Ive used it to even lift off press on decals, rinse them in cold water, and let them dry and re-stick them just like factory. Its a little different from something like Goo-Gone or such, its not a solvent but seems just as powerful as one.
