I have the whole kit. It's heavy, it's well made, it all fits together nicely. The windshield of the canopy is already covered with a removable film, so you can paint the canopy (outside) and peel off the mask.
The rest of the plastic takes dye really well. Rather than paint, I dyed my white blades to a black color and dyed the body to a deep blue. Here RITZ is a popular product. Any fabric dye will work. Very hot water is required and the plastic dyes just like cloth.
After dying my new Xtreme parts I did overspray the dye with a quick shot of color to get a good color match between the canopy and the other parts. Here's the result.

Ah well, thanks soloboss i think you have now confused me...........

I thought (newbie kicks in) that i should apply the stickers to the inside and it would look like it does in pic below ........

I take it then that this is not the case ..............

Any help on canopy please

And soloboss, how come you have nearly 1000 posts and are so respected on forum, yet your avantar says basic member............ you must be far from basic by far

I think those Xtreme parts look great. So if you are going for asthetics then you did awesome. If flight performance is your goal I'd return them. (except the canopy) I'm finding out these heli's are extremely sensitive to additional weight. Just depends on what your goals are.

OK, Clear canopies.

1. The outside is covered with overspray film. IT covers the entire outside of the canopy. Usally the clear ones are painted on the inside, then crashes won't scratch the paint. I would recommend not masking off the window, and just painting it. Then cover the "window" from the outside with some sort of black sticker.

Outside? why wouldn't you paint the inside like all other rc bodies?

That's what I epected as that is standard with all RC bodies I have ever seen.It would be nice if they gave you a window mask to apply but I imagine you have to make your own. Paint from the inside and it is not only more durable but it looks way cleaner/professional. You can't beat a lexan clear coat.

Also make sure you are using lexan specific hobby paint, regular spray paint will flake offover time.

Could i in that case take the window masking film off and spray black then spary inside white ? Would that work or will window just keep scratching ?

See thats why im a little confused why would you have overspray film on outside and window if your spraying inside

The overspray mask is on the outside so that when you spray the inside you don;t get any on the outside. The window mask should go on the inside, but by the looks of the decal sheet it doens;t come with one so you may have to make one yourself.

1, Put the window mask on the inside if there isn't one already there.
2. Spray the main canopy color, lots of light coats work best.
3. remove the window mask after it dries.
4. If you want a tinted/black window spray black onto the inside.
5. Remove the outer masking.

Bingo! Make sure you put the white on fairly solid , a good way to check is to hold it up to some natural light between coats. Also wipe down the inside to get rid of finger prints after you apply the window mask.

My canopy did come with window masks, a separate sheet from the decals. But it is a pain to get them in as my fingers are too long (and too fat) to get down in there. I ended up with a couple of runs, which I scraped off with an exacto knife. Then I used a transparent paint for the canopy. I didn't want a solid color, as I want to see the lights when I arm the 3-in-1 unit. If I do another one, I might use a brush for the body color, as it is hard to spray down into the canopy as well.

Ya, my LHS actually carries a window tint paint, which I am going to use. It is not aerosol though, however I have an airbrush for doing this kind of thing which is hands down the way to go. I'm glad to hear it comes with a wondow mask, My Xtreme kit (in black) should be in this week some time. I didn't buy the skids though, I think (and soloboss confirmed this) that they will just add to much weight and maybe break in a hard landing. I ordered some indestructable rubber skids intead.

To the OP, you can buy this kit as well as alot of other cool stuff for the CX from boomtownhobbies. I ordered mine form Ebay as well before I stumbled across this awesome site. He has an awesome selection of aftermarket parts specifically for the CX and the prices are cheaper/on par with Ebay

Ah good point i forgot about the lights, i think window tint spray would darken the window and not effect the white as much while letting me still (hopefully) see the lights

Great advice biggreenmachine

Good point bonsaidude Will brush marks not show ? I was going to use airbrush kit i have for models but might not be practicle for a concave cockpit

If it is hard to spray, it will be even harder to get a brush in there. I wouldn't even consider brushing it myself. I tried to brush in a racing stripe that i had taped off and it was horrible, plus the brush blead up under the tape unlike spray. I would use your airbrush, a good paint to buy is Fastkolor. They are the ones that make the window tint. I was actually considering doing my whole canopy in the window tint. I seen it set up without paint and just decals and it looked pretty decent so I thought just tiniting it and putting the stickers on would be pretty sweet.

Well, I was thinking on the solid color that it wouldn't matter so much. With the rattle can, there were some areas that I just could not get much paint on, because it would swirl around.

Tinting the whole think might look pretty cool. In that case, I might think about just dyeing it. The spray tint on the "glass" area came out OK, but I would think you would have the same problem with even coverage in the nooks and crannies.

I don't think you can dye lexan. It isn't really porous at all like plastic. You're right about brusling not really mattering on solid colors, you won't see the strokes but you do have to go over it a few times to make it solid and it is just a pain from my experience.

So both brushing and spraying would give the desired results but dying is a no no then........

I'm not sure about dying. It just seems likei t wouldn't work, either way you cant dye it if you want to have solid color on there as well. That would only work if you wanted to tint the whole this translucent. I would use your airbrush, afterall that's what its for.

I'm not sure about thinning, however, when you spray the black you would have to spray it on very thick to drown out the LEDs. The paint always looks really solid until you hold a light behind it, I wound't be too worried. I would just ty and get consistant coverage. Worse case scenario is you can still see the lights when you look from above. I don't think the canopy blocks out all of the interior.

I wish they sold a ready to paint stock CX2 canopy as I actually like it's design alot better than the T-rex style Xtreme one. I think the stock canopy makes it look a lot beefier and realistic. I am looking forward to painting it out, but I wouldn't have orderd it if it wasn't included in the kit I got off of Ebay.

I think they look kinda apache looking in stock form and yeah if they did one in clear i would probably go for that look it could look real nice

I understand what your saying about the black and think that the lights would still be visible so ill go down that route, ill post up step by step pics of how it goes to see erm......well....... how it goes
