Default How to Run Pump at Max Voltage to Test Fuel System With Engine Off

Since I've had JetCat's in the past, this is easy to do with their GSU.

This procedure is what I like to do every time I have a new jet to test how robust my fuel system at it's final set up point.

How can I simulate the engine running at full throttle by running the fuel pump running at full throttle to drain my fuel tanks and check for leaks?

Thanks Barry and Dirk!

Take fuel line off turbine and plumb to fuel churn

Use your data terminal and prime pump function

That will only let the pump run for a few seconds, until it reaches max output, then stop.
I don't think you can just run the pump at max voltage for a while to test the fuel system with xicoy at all

All of mine will run until you press stop on the data terminal.

Just go into the prime pump function and open the shut off valve and run the fuel back into you fuel can. I use this every time I change something in the fuel system to check it out before flight.

Will have to try it with the newer xicoy ecus then, I remember the older one would cut after reaching the maximum. Haven't actually tried with the newer one though, now that I think about it.

This can be done at full throttle type pump voltages running through the pump?

Ok, sorry to bring this back up. I could've sworn this worked on my previous king tech install. But when I press on on the primp pump fxn, the pump starts slowly and then constantly increases it's speed and then it just stops.

Occasionally, the screen will briefly say "overload" and then it will return to the run screen.

Any ideas?

Make sure shut off valve is open and fuel line ran into a container.

It could be a clogged fuel filter or kinked fuel line. (if the plane has been sitting look here first)
Bad ECU battery
Bad pump

Brand new install in a brand new jet. The engine is a few years old, but with only 4 hours on it, K180G if that matters.

The engine starts and runs great! The batteries are fresh and I don't run fuel filters other than the high flow BVM UAT.

I do have a 1S lipo that was going to connect to the pump (3.7 volts) and just run the pump that way, but how can I tell if I have a bad pump?

You guys understand how important it is to check your fuel tank set up on the ground to make sure it is all bubble free!

Thank you gunradd.

NP Rav.

At this point I would give Barry or Dirk a call. I know Barry is on vacation right now so wait a bit for him or try Dirk.

What I ended up doing was hooking up a 1s lipo at right around 3.7v to the pump and ran the pump that way.

The fuel system checked out great too!

Rav, if you looped it from a jar of fuel and still having overload, then it's probably a sticky pump, such a pump may not give you the best idle, sometimes even flaming out during deceleration. You could also try to reverse the pump with the looped jar, the idea is to "exercise" it, good luck and let us know.

Hi Barry,

Do you recommend that I don't use this pump? Should I just run it, say, 10 times in a row?

Here is a vid of what it does.

The pump limit is 636 Barry.

You may want to reestablish the pump limit by running it up to full power and take that pw value and add a 10%, chances are you may end up at around 300s, then you may have a better overall throttle resolution and probably even better idle, probably be able to solve your problem of test run pump to drain you tank.

Above is also explained in the manual under troubleshooting for rough or high idle.

Regards,
Barry

I'll give that a try Barry and I'll report back!

Thanks for the help.
