Ever Been Attacked By Wildlife While Flying?
I was hovering my mate's Raptor yesterday. It is not set up in the same way as mine - its really touchy, as compared with my Raptor's Fleetwood-class feel. It was fairly gusty, so I was concentrating quite a bit.
I felt a tickle at the back of my neck, then a slight itch. Then PAIN!!!!1
Cursing, I wrestled the heli down, then swatted at the back of my neck.
The culprit? A single fire ant, now quite dead.
I'm still not sure how I got that heli down intact wot with the pain. I have a huge welt on my neck from the bite.
The funny part? One of the guys was standing right behind me, spoted the ant on my neck and mentioned it to the Raptor's owner... just before it struck.

Black flies and mosquitos are bad but deer flies are horrible! At least the bug dope does something for the smaller flying critters.

once while i was concentrating on landing (not realizing i was flying with my mouth open) a wasp flew right in my mouth. (just before my plane was needing to flair). i spit out and did NOT get stung (miraculously)....but the plane did hit the runway luckily right on the gear. just a broken prop.
don't fly with your mouth open.

I had a big, BIG beetle or yellowjacket or something decide to kamikaze itself into the side of my face while I was on landing approach (after a deadstick landing demonstration) with my 25% Sukhoi. Hit hard enough to leave a red mark.
Ended up just cracking my foam rubber tires from the "excessive approach angle". That's the only damage wildlife has caused.

Yup, there was this heli flier who flew alone recently and was struck at knife point by two robbers who eventually got away with all his r/c stuff and car. Which "wildlife" could be worse than that !!
but man thats bad![:@]

For anyone with prescription glasses:
I'm sure this has happened to you all. I love it when the big huge fly lands on my lens and walks around so I can't see what I'm doing!!!

I'm worried about Rattle Snakes crossing the flight line or to retrieve a plane[X(], one made it's way into our mower storage shed, I,m glad I was not there.

at our rc field, there is a small colony of bees that lives in our friendly litle tree. our club president had a pepsi that he left on the table to help somebody out, just for a second. he came back, took a sip, and it turned out that about 3-4 bees had flown into his drink. he swallowed them and he got stung all over his throat. he was taken to the hospital, where apparently his son, who was there, told him that he needed some sipper cups. acording to the story he presented us with at the next meeting, he tried to get up and strangle him but the iv lines kept him from doing it. he was not quite flying, but he was at the field and he is our club president. it was pretty funny

Last year we had an 18" snapping turtle slowwwwwly working it's way across our field. One of our club members tried to speed him up a bit by prodding him with a (fortunately) big stick. The legs may not move fast, but boy, you should have seen how quickly that head came out and snapped the stick prodding his, er tail!

Back in the drought of the '50's a friend and I were flying freeflight airplanes in a pasture near Lubbock, TX. We could see a dust storm coming, but misjudged it. We were about 150 yards away from or car. The storm hit with high winds and maybe 50 ft visibility. We gathered up our airplanes and all our stuff and hoped we were walking toward the car. For some reason all the rattlesnakes came out. We had not seen one all day, but saw maybe 20 on the way back to the car. We made it ok; nothing lost or broken and no rattlesnake bites. It was a strange experience!

There I am taking off for the maiden voyage on my 130" B-17, 2 engines on the same side flare out...and out of the corner of my eye I see an elephant charging me.
I was the only one at the field and I had to make a big decision.
I flew the B-17 into the path of the elephant, destroying the aircraft , and frightening away the elephant.
Then I woke up and said to myself, damn, I'm late for work !

We have a dog that just keeps showing up at our field. The other day I was flying my foamy and I see the dog walking out onto the runway. He walks right up under my plane in the middle of the runway and bows up to do his thing. I buzzed him and torqued the plane down right to about a couple of feet over his head and he just kept on crapping.
I don't know if he was expressing his opinion of my flying or of our runway...

We have 2 or 3 red tail hawks at our field this year. They have been dive-bombing our planes pretty regular. They haven't made contact with any powered planes, but they did take a chunk out of a glider fuselage, and poked about 10 holes in the wings. I've been chasing the *******s with my Cor-Star, because there is no way they are going to hurt that. Well, the other night I'm all by myself flying, and had been chasing this one around. I hadn't seen the hawk for a while, and at the top of a loop, I hear this WHOOSH sound right over my head! The dang thing was buzzing me! It happened twice more that night before I decided I like my head too much for it to get taken off by a psychotic raptor. Those birds just may end up with lead poisoning in the near future.

Only thing is he must be dumb because I would not stand on the runway when I'm flying no matter how bad I had to go or how much I wanted to make a statement.
Sometimes I don't even fell comfortable standing out there at the flight station watching myself. A couple of times I started to run under the shed with everyone else...
