Startup stand/table for flying field
I'm looking or plans or pictures of airplane startup/runup stands. We've got a few young student pilots at our field and I'd like to provide a safer way for them to start their engines. I think it will come in handy for runup and engine tweaking by other members as well.
I've seen pictures (never can find anything twice) of mid thigh high tables with two padded vertical arms for restraining the airplane via the wing LE. Some have had transmitter trays or shelves, etc. If any of you have pictures of such a table or plans/drawings for building one I'd appreciate the help.
Thanks

There was an article about stands in Model Aviation back in late 2002 I think. I'm sure it was in MA but don't remember the month.

RE: Startup stand/table for flying field
I just checked the AMA Model Aviation archives. For some reason they stop in 2000. Couldn't see August 2002. I know it's asking a lot but if anyone has the August 2002 Model Aviation and could scan the plans into a .pdf or .jpg it would be most appreciated. Email is [email protected].
BTW NitroWoman, thanks for the picture. I never thought about adding wheels! That'll make these much easier to move when I mow.
Thanks to all for the responses.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not condemning those stands, but they are not necessarily safer than properly restraining and working at ground level. They put a spinning prop at waist level, which also happens to be the same height at which your hands swing around at.
I stuck my hand in a 14x6 prop on a Saito 91 turning about 6000rpm last year. I acknowledge that I was complacent and put my hand where it should not have been. However, I firmly beleive that if the plane had not been on the "safety stand", I would not have had the convenient opportunity to put my hand where it was in the first place.
I'm sure there are just as good reasons why they are safer than leaving the plane on the ground.
All I'm saying is just be careful around running engines period.......

RE: Startup stand/table for flying field
I'm in the Greenville TX club.
Our web site is www.geenvillerc.com
We have 12 of the stands built from the plans in Model Aviation.
The photo NitroWoman posted looks exactly like what we have, except we don't have wheels on ours.
They are mostly 2x6 with 1x6 for the diagonal braces, trim, and 'shelf' at the front.
I do not keep the magazine or I'd send you the article.

Do a search. There is a thread (Field Stand). There are photos and comments. I have a post on this thread with photos of my stand.

We also built the stands shown in this post.. We made one improvement, Instead of using an extension of the front legs, we cut that off and drilled 1 3/4" holes to insert a plastic pipe covered with 1/2" foam. AND for those that prefered we made removeable 3/4" steel pipe with foam covering to hold the tail.. With this system a pilot has a choice of wing OR tail to hold his model securely..
